Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New England?

Re: Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New Englan

I'm still expecting the Pats to ship a QB off to Atlanta. The brain trust in Chicago just doesn't seem to get it.

that would make sense to me.

From a purely economic standpoint, there must be teams around the league where Cassel is more valuable to them than he is to the Pats. I hope Cassel is showcased in the preseason and he plays so well that he becomes an attractive alternative to someone like ATL.

If he did play well in Pre-season, what kind of trade value would he have?

Lets be serious, and candid, for a moment here - if Brady goes down the Pats are eff'd. I know it, you know it - even those of you with the ultra homer glasses on.

Matt Cassell has shown zero improvement the past two years. I think back to the Miami game when Brady came back in after some hideous play by Matt. What gives any of you any reason to feel any kind of confidence regarding this kid? Can anyone here say he's actually better than Guttierez?

Hell, at this point I'd be willing to say that O'Connell's development is ahead of Cassell's. And that Miami game was pathetic. How he can give the game BACK to the DOLPHINS just bewilders me.

Re: Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New Englan

We have probably seen enough to conclude that Cassel would likely struggle a bit if thrown into a game unexpectedly with a Brady injury. What I'm less sure about is how he would react as the expected starter with a full week of practice with the 1's.

I fully expected Cassel and Gutierrez to be splitting the non-Brady snaps in camp. Cassel getting the majority of the #2 opportunities could mean that Cassel is getting the first shot at the backup job or (as others have noted) that Cassel is being showcased for potential trade.

Given the minimal amount of value that Cassel will bring back in a trade (even with a great pre-season showing) and the need to get Gutierrez up to speed to be backup in the event of a trade, I would probably vote for the former.

Re: Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New Englan

His attitude this past off season seemed lackadaisical
Haven't heard this before. What did he do? Or not do?

Re: Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New Englan

I could have sworn BB said something about Cassel having a good offseason. No?

He was beaten by Jason Taylor. What's bewildering about that.

Or did you mean the first Miami game (a couple years ago) where he brought us back and almost won the game with third stringers against Miami's first string defense?

THursday's game will show a lot.

For the love of God, can we please stop drawing lasting conclusions on the basis of about five plays?

And let's not forget that the pick was by the reigning DPOY, not the likes of Cameron Worrell. . . .

What coaches make decisions on and what fans look for are two entirely different things.

Randall Gay was crucified on this site for weeks for a TD he "allowed" against Plax. Then Harrison mentioned that on that play he was at fault for not being in the right position. Gay was late getting there because it wasn't his responsibility. That's why it is so hard for fans to make personnel decisions

Besdies, we fans put great emphasis on single magnificent or horrible plays. Sometimes players are judged forever by fans for one good or bad play in COLLEGE.

Coaches not only see the guy for 16 hours a day, and also know what he was supposed to do when he made that good or bad play. And they see work ethic, etc.

All that said, six picks in two games cannot be a good thing.

Didn't All Solar System Tom Brady lose a game against the Phins late in the 4th QTR (2005? I forget) tossing up a very stupid limp pass that went for a game losing INT? Anyone who has played QB has more than once totally embarrased themselves. The question with Cassie is can he THIS preseason prove that he's clearly head and shoulders the best alternative to Brady of the backups? If not, it's adios to his contract year.

He won an offseason workout award, but that doesn't guarantee him a roster spot.

I agree. It was kind of a "trick" play in that Taylor dropped from the defensive left and ran across the field to jump a slant route. Cassel threw the pick because Taylor wasn't anywhere in his field of view until the last second.

I think Belichick was pissed that he took his foot off the pedal and the Fins left Taylor in and essentially ran a modified zone blitz with him to screw with Belichick's plan to get his backup some work. He didn't put Brady back in to run out the clock and win the game...he put Brady back in to score and slap the Fins in the mouth.

Not excusing the pick Cassel threw, just putting it in context.

Understood, I just thought the comment about his "lackadaisical" offseason seemed out of sync with that.

Re: Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New Englan

I believe you mean 3 INT in 2 consecutive practices. 6 total. Obviously the number isn't good but without knowing if WR are in the right place or not it's tough to cut Cassel based on this.
He said it OK, albeit perhaps a bit ambiguously. If he said 6 INT *for* 2 consecutive games, that would be different, but he said 6 *in* 2 consecutive games (as opposed to spread out with non-IT games inbetween).

Re: Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New Englan

Like I said, 6 INT doesn't sound good. But he could throw a perfect pass and have some 3rd string WR not get to where he's supposed to and it goes right to the defender instead. On the surface it sounds bad; beneath the surface it's tough to say. We'll have a better idea after the preseason games.
Perhaps for 1 or 2 INT's, but not 6.

Re: Cassel with 6 interceptions in 2 days at camp - Working his way out of New Englan

I was there yesterday morning for my lone trip, and based on my impressions, none of the backup QBs particularly stood-out. I'd say in terms of pure throwing the ball, Cassell was actually the least un-impressive. That's about as good as I can put it ;)

For the love of God, beleive it or not, not everything in Patsland smells like roses. Imagine that! LOL!

Can we agree that if Brady (God forbid) goes down for any real length of time, this team would STRUGGLE to make the playoff's.

He did not win an offseason award this year. That was 2007. The reason I said lackadaisical was in his interviews in the offseason made him seem complacent in his position saying these like "I’m the second best" and "this year is the same as every year". ( http://www.patsfans.com/price/blog/?p=407 ) To me someone who wants to be a starter in this league should have a little more enthusiasm especially in a contract year to prove themselves to the league that they can play. I wouldn't want to be second best even if it was behind TB. Maybe it's just the west-coast mentality he has, but if he doesn't show something this year he will be out of a job real soon.
