Realistic for Edelman to play in playoffs?

We have been told that Edelman's bone injury will heal in time for the playoffs, the implication being that Edelman would then be ready to play for the playoffs.

But even assuming Edelman's broken bone does heal, how do we know the muscles he uses to support that bone will be strong enough to support the intense force Edelman places on them during a game?

Suppose for the sake of specificity that when Edelman does one of his incredible moves he is using a specific muscle M around the broken bone B. Now, suppose that the bone B is fully healed by say, January 17 in time for the playoffs.

The problem is that Edelman would not have been exercising the muscle M normally for the previous 8 weeks. He couldn't really because he has to avoid stress being placed on the bone B while it was healing. And it would take at least a month, probably more, for the muscle M to recover to normal if it has not been exercised as much as usual - and that month can only start once the bone is fully healed.

The other point is that, although we were told Edelman might be back in time for the playoffs, these estimates might have been due to general medical assessments. But Edelman is unique: his quickness and speed of direction change (as shown by any of the several Edelman threads I've started here) are virtually unprecedented in a receiver. Thus, it may be that he puts more force on his feet and legs than a normal player, so that standard medical timetables would not apply.

I certainly have no specialized medical knowledge or expertise. I know when I have had operations, I can get up to 90% reasonably quickly but to really regain full 100% strength, including muscle strength, has taken me at least 6 months. Just the inactivity is hard to recover from.

Choose door #2.........life's too short

Based on the luck of this season
This season reminds me of Gene Kranz's line from Apollo 13: "only if their luck changes", in response to someone asking if the returning spacecraft might miss a typhoon predicted near splashdown. (Actually Belichick reminds me of Kranz, but that's another topic)

To answer your question, I'm usually inclined to go by the opinion of physicians who make such projections as part of their profession. That's what I'm typically most comfortable with. Sure, occasionally, they're somewhat off but, by and large, their projections are very accurate. Plus, that projection came from medical professionals who examined him, operated on him and monitor him.

There's medically cleared to play and being 100%. In professional sports they don't wait for you to be 100% to be medically cleared.

Yes

It's pretty straightforward from here.

Didn't heal - surgery #2, no playoffs
Healed, re-breaks - plays until re-break, surgery #2
Healed, no re-break - plays, takes it easy after the playoffs

Realistic he plays yeah. Realistic he is 100 percent and looks like he didn't just miss the last 8 weeks with a foot injury, probably not.

Imagine the roar from the crowd when he makes his first catch. ;)

That's what concerns me. I hope we are seeing a higher standard of care than Gronk and his broken arm in 2012.

Good thing Gill isn't overseeing Jules' care.

I agree with your thoughts, although he's at the 7 week mark right now, hence the recent comparisons to the Dez Bryant timeline, who also came back at the 7 week point.

I'm assuming that the idea was to try and get the bye and keep him resting the entire time, so that he could reach the 9 week mark in the divisional round. They erred on the side of caution, as they should have. Nothing left to do now but hope that he can hold up and produce come mid-January.

Marvin Jones got a jones fracture back in the 2014 preseason and was due back in about 8 weeks before injuring something else and being placed on IR. Kevin Durant also suffered a jones fracture in 2014 and returned in about 8 weeks. He was pretty close to 100% scoring 27 points his first night back. It's not football but you do put a lot of stress on your feet in basketball.

I would be surprised if Edelman didn't play in the divisional round.

Although there's this study about jones fractures in nfl players and it shows that the timetable to return is closer to 10 weeks.

This Forum is too funny.
Just this week there was a thread with guys all over us who felt it best to rest the Squirrel.
Suddenly he's not on the plane to Miami as some of us expected, and WHAM, the play Edelperson NOW! folks doing a 180, dejected that he's out for the playoffs or so ineffectual that he's gonna be like Ocho out there.

Huh??? OK, doc I get where this is going.

Look Peyton Manning came back from...

...so completely, what could JE possibly not have that Manning had to come back from an itty bitty foot injury?

Okay I kid because I love. He's out for Miami. That's three additional weeks out between games including this one.

None of us really know where he stands in reality. All we know is he didn't travel to Miami. That might mean "yeah he could have but why take chances" and/or "yeah but he'd just be out there to be a decoy."

We'll see how completely he comes back, but yes I think he's back in the divisional round.

The recovery time is listed at 6-8 weeks. He'll get 8 weeks. What else you going to do?

If he and Amendola are 80% and Martin, who's looked great for a guy who's new and missed a bunch of games mid season, are respectable that leaves Gronk and LaFell and Chandler in limited roles.

Unlike 2013, there is cavalry coming and I'm expecting Jackson, against non Jet teams, to really contribute and White is a fine receiver.

It's football, it's emotion. I can see a second wind with this team.

Hope they find a way on sunday. I want the playoffs to go through foxboro. Don't worry about matchups no matter how tough they look
