Reminiscent of the great Willie Mays' time with the Mets. Or Ali v. Leon Spinks.
But he got to swan around the field holding his record ball aloft so it's all good.
Interesting parallel with PM/Ali.
Ali should have called it quits when he beat Ernie Shavers.
PM should have called it quits at the end of last year.
After Ali fought Spinks in the first fight he was completely done. The split decision was a joke but he was competitive. The 2nd vs Spinks was not even close. Then he fought Larry Holmes in LV and got beaten to a pulp which Holmes still feels bad about. Ali's last fight was a loss to Trevor Berbick which was also a beating.
I was a kid back then and didn't really appreciate how great Ali was but remember commentators saying how tough it was to watch Holmes throttling a once great champion with ease.
PM obviously doesn't have Ali's greatness but it is tough to watch a once great QB play like this.
I get it though. Playing, the limelight, the attention, the crowd, the locker room is all a big drug. Its all they know and life without it is a scary thing. That was Ali's problem. He needed the attention and the violence in his life. Maybe not the violence but I think PM needs the same thing.
Brady might be the same way. Not the attention or stats but just playing and proving himself every day. Its a powerful thing. Bird said that he should have retired after the 88 season because he was in so much pain but he needed the competition and played 3 more years. The difference here is that when Larry felt good, he still controlled games but it just didn't happen every night anymore.
