You would have thought someone involved in the editing department would have asked, "is this funny? Does it go to far?"
The reality in comedy is that when your business is getting as close to the line as you can, sometimes you cross it. It happens, and it's sort of the unfortunately price you pay for edgy comedy. This one, though, seems so substantially over the line that you wonder why anyone would have thought it didn't. It's kind of like the Michael Richards thing. He was shooting for edgy and overshot by a pretty wide margin, to the point where you say, "what was he thinking?" But at least his was spur of the moment. This probably had to go through some layers to get published.
