Brandt: You don't win titles with players like Welker

"Wes Welker is a good football player ... but you're not going to win championships with that kind of player.''
-- Sirius NFL Radio host and former Dallas personnel czar Gil Brandt, on his satellite show last week, discussing the wide receiver/returner who was traded from Miami to New England last month.

Someone remind Gil how many rings Bingo has, please. Maybe approaching 75 it's time Gil took up bingo and left the sweeping NFL commentary to the rest of his mediot peers.

What King didn't mention in his article is that Brandt later clarified what he said by adding that you don't win with a TEAM FULL of Wes Welkers. He didn't say that you can't win a championship with Wes Welker on your team.

Hey, you wouldn't win with a team full of Bradys, either.

It's a silly comment to make.

Brandt is in the Jerry Rice category of Sirius NFL radio hosts. He knows a little bit about the Cowboys, but other than that he isn't in tune with the modern NFL. If you want to hear about Leonard Davis or Drew Pearson, Brandt is your favorite host.

Absolutely, but the comment was a little more innocuous than it is being made out to be.

Is Wes Welker the next Don Beebe?

Is he the next Wayne Chrebet?

Or is the next Brandon Stokely?

When will people learn that the Patriots have won when no one thought they could. They have beat the goliaths of the league, overcame free agent losses and have done it for half a decade. I am sure Brandt had a thought out point, but I don't see it in the comment.

I keep forgetting, how many SuperBowl championship teams has Gil Brandt been on again.....?

Just FYI, I think he was with the Cowboys for two of their Super Bowl Champions.

NO!!! IT WAS EVIL!!! :)

You're right. What the heck was I thinking.

Gil Brandt is a well known Patriots basher just looking to rock the boat!!! That Bastard is the Devil I tell ya.

I guess Brandt thinks Welker is a downgrade over Caldwell and Gaffney?

Because those two plus Troy had us coming pretty darn close to going to the SB where I think pretty much everyone would have expected us to come back with a pinky ring.

So Welker hurts us how?

Seeing that there's no context I guess Brandt's just saying that the Welker signing isn't as big as say, all the free agent additions of the Indianapolis Colts.

He might have a point.

Welker is our next Troy Brown....and last I checked, we won three with him

I was going to post this too!

Welker is a reasonable facsimile of Troy.

We don't get to or win our first SB without a guy like him.

What a dumbass!:bricks:

The comment still doesn't make sense. It was previously stated in this thread that he said it in response to a Dolphin fan calling in a lamenting the loss of Welker. So really, he was addressing the Dolphins not the Patriots. What makes it truly puzzling to me is the fact that the Dolphins don't have a team full of Wes Welkers, so I don't know what the hell he is talking about. If anything that team is filled with quite a few overpayed and underachieving players.

A team full of Chris Chambers-es-es.

He was most definitely addressing it from the Dolphins perspective, stating that even though they are losing Welker, gaining a second rounder wasn't necessarily a bad thing. My impression was that he was reassuring Dolphin Nation saying that Welker is just a piece of the puzzle but if you were to build your team completely around players like him you wouldn't be very successful.

Having heard his tone and the context of what he was saying it's being totally overblown.

Dolphin Nation ?

if there is such a thing, must be one of the smallest nation's in the world. i'll bet qatar dwarfs it, or maybe the united arab emirates republic.

I like Gil Brandt, but that was a pretty stupid comment. I could understand if Welker was the only wide receiver that was signed but that simply is not the case. Welker was not signed to be the "savior" or "face of the franchise". Welker is going to prove to be very valuable on special teams and as a slot receiver.

I'm pretty sure he meant, and he later added that you "don't win a SB with a team full of Wes Welkers". I'll agree with him on that.
Not me. In 2001, our #1 was Troy Brown, our #2 was some Arena League guy who was out of football (Patten) and our #3 was Fred Coleman.

And we won a superbowl.
