Edelman offered 3-year deal, he opts to test free agency

-We're in the bottom half of the league in available cap space.
-Year in and year out the team manages to the cap to allow for flexibility without mortgaging the future.
-This approach has resulted in the most gaudy win/loss % in league history since Brady stepped under center.

So what happens when a guy with 1 solid season walks? Shrill cries of "WE NEVER PAY OUR PLAYERS"

This fanbase is full of idiots who don't know how good of a thing we've got and why we have it.

You were doing fine until the last sentence. Most of the people on this message board know how good we've had it since Bob Kraft bought the team and Bill Parcells came into town and put the Patriots on a great path.

That aside, Edelman is entering some very interesting territory for a guy who will be catching passes from somebody who may not know how to protect him the way Tom Brady does.

Does anybody know what the guaranteed money was in this three-year deal?

If Edelman signs a better deal, the guaranteed money better be good. Wes Welker had two serious concussions last season because Manning throws these fluttering ducks that allow defenders to line him up for big hit, as he did with Austin Collie.

If he goes to Cleveland, he'll get killed. Who will be throwing him passes that are out of the reach of defenders, and are placed so that he's not heading into ferocious hit? The Jets will be the same. Geno Smith is busy trying not to get himself killed, much less placing the ball in a perfect spot for his receivers.

The guy that went to the perfect situation was Danny Woodhead who was used properly in San Diego last season.

I wish Julian Edelman well. He has been a great Patriot, and deserves to be rewarded for what he's done, and find a good fit.

Ah, the FA period isn't even underway yet and the flamebaiting and insult heaving has already begun.

Substance=Pats are the greatest...gotcha

No, substance is doing something other than drooling all over your keyboard and pressing Submit Reply.

@goheels
7 million guaranteed apparently.

Two things. Edelman stands to get a better contract than he'd dreamed either way. Does quality of life matter too? (For most intelligent players, I think so. Invest that money and you're set either way, but be stuck on a miserable team, organization or location and your stuck...every day until you retire).

Second, if he decides to take an offer elsewhere, he's at the tippy top of his value ever, most likely. If the Patriots made a generous offer, they have plenty of options that might be better and save money. Hard to predict the future, but any logical thinking person looking at FA options has to admit that.

Robert Kraft: "We wanted Julian back but, when he didn't sign before Tuesday, we had to move on to plan B."

Jonathan Kraft: "It was his agent's fault."

Edelman's agent: "The deal was not fair value, and we didn't appreciate the deadline issued."

Tom Brady: "%#$@&"

Patsfans.com: "Edelman is an evil traitor!"

Wes Welker:

"Welcome to the club, Minitron."

Wait for Reiss' defense of the realm

...and it didn't take long for someone to demonstrate the incredible pettiness of the NE fans. Congrats to you. You are why the whole country hates Patriots fans.

You mean after you displayed your pettiness in crying about contract negotiations?

edelman's predicament is that there are literally zero places he would reproduce last year's feat....I just don't think he's worth as much anywhere else.

my prediction is that there will no suitors who will improve on what the pats have given him.

Not sure if people have missed this in their hysteria, but there have been reports out of multiple outlets stating that the Pats and Edelman will continue to negotiate. There's also reports out of multiple outlets of potential interest from the Ravens. Now that isn't good.

Either way, Edelman can be replaced. He's not in Welker's league as a receiver and there are other viable options out there. Now, whether or not the team targets them is another story...

It does not matter; it should not even get to that point, in the past 3 season the Patriots have signed –

- Chad Johnson – 3 years/$11.95 million
- Brandon Lloyd – 3 years/$12 million
- Danny Amendola – 5 years/$28.5 million

While letting Wes Welker and now potentially Julian Edelman walks out the door. I would not mind if the team was just tight with their money and that is what caused it but they are not tight with the money they are being idiotic with it, blowing it on players that underwhelm and drawing a hard line with players that do produce.

They gave Amendola a 5-year deal worth almost $30 million; did they really think that Edelman and his agent were going to take a 3-year deal? That is just being stupid, end of story.

I love the Patriots but they make many mistakes in their personnel decisions, and most are covered up by the greatness of Tom Brady but there is a reason that even with the GOAT QB we have not been able to win a SB for a decade.

Before the dogs attack and defend Belichick and Kraft’s honor let me just say I have every right to be disappointed in this team, if Edelman walks it is back to back season where we let our most productive offensive player (other than Brady) walk out the door.

My guess is Edelman has a better offer but it's from a crappy team. Possibly Cleveland. Maybe he's willing to go there since he went to Kent State and has roots there but not before trying to get the Pats to sweeten the offer.

Oh well. It's Jules best chance to get paid. Wish him all the best.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

I'm praying he does. I just hope we didn't low-ball him.

LOL

Of course they low balled him! It wouldn't be the Patriot way otherwise

If we do lose Edelman, it'll hurt our punt return game if we can't replace him adequately.

Our passing game? No worries if Brady is still back there.

Of course, best is not synonymous with most productive, and, really, having JA as your most productive offensive player is an indictment in and of itself.

The definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Given that we know the specifics of what was offered, we also you know you're talking straight out your hind parts.

Blount has punt returns covered....if NE can spare a vet minimum deal
