Why Is Sopoaga Still On the Team?

The New York Jets are run by morons. I would not use that NFL franchise as an example going forward.

Thank you for reminding us. Sometimes, with all the hand wringing and gnashing of teeth about Edelman's contract, Wilfork's cap hit, Talib's hip, etc, I forget which division the Patriots are in. Bill Belichick could win the AFC East from a medically induced coma.

I think it's because Belichick got drunk and sent Sopoaga nude selfies while wearing lingerie and now Sopoaga is using it against him as blackmail/leverage.

It's become clear over the seasons that this is a recurring problem with BB. Kraft needs to get this under control.

Belichick may not want to fess up to another failed trade just yet.

As a person who blogged/posted that Sopoaga would be released on February 3rd I will offer these reasons
1.) Patriots along with the rest of the NFL was surprised by the increase of the cap. In their 126.3 million budget Sopoaga would have been released by now.
2.) working on a deal to reduce his 2014/2015/2016 cap numbers
3.) if Sopoaga gets released on a busy transactions day there will be less time to opine that the Patriots made a bad trade.

Dude,

Relax. Roster is 90.

The need for cap space is not urgent RIGHT NOW.

Breathe. Breathe.

Bad trade? You're kidding, right? Years from now, people will surely be talking about how Bill Belichick got fleeced for the 189th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Patriots traded a 5th round pick for Sopoaga and a 6th round pick after Wilfork was placed on IR.

Look on the bright side, the Patriots only moved down 25 picks in the draft to pick 22nd in the 6th round.

If Sopoaga counts against the Patriots in the compensatory picks calculations as I and others suspect, he will also cost us a 6th round comp pick in 2014. The compensatory picks will be announced later this month.

Not sure what the hold up could be. Reiss said he expects the move to come any day now. It seems like a no brainer that he will be cut, just a question of when and why wait.

What's the rush?

Seriously, roster is 90 so we don't need the space.

He won't be a big time FA - or he does not appear to think he is - so the "doing him a favor" by cutting him before FA does not apply.

Right now, before FA, there is no pressing need for cap room.

All that said, he could be cut as soon as FA begins - or he may not. Don't panic until the final 53 are announced.

Failed? In what, week 3, 4, or 5 -I forget. Please remind me of all the talent we could have realistically gotten then.

I doubt many people care, I'm more worried about his second round stinkbombs like Tavon Wilson and Ras-I Dowling.

Why is Sopo still on the team?

At this point in time, what difference does it make?

The difference is the same as Gregory, about $2M or so of cap room.

Also, if a player is a total failure, as folks suggested regarding Sopoaga, then there is no reason to keep him.

I suggest that he showed the team something to want to keep him as insurance or camp competition in case of injury.

You just posted in another thread that there was no need to move on Wilfie or Kelly at this point in time because we have 15M in cap room at this point in time . Why the obsession with Sopo at this point in time?

Maybe they forgot he was on the team.

Seriously, though it could have been that they asked Gregory to take a pay cut he refused so they took him behind the barn and shot him. If they have no intentions of asking Sopoaga to rework his deal he probably is not a priority currently and they will release him when they finish reworking the deals of others.

Heh! Great post!

Or maybe they will consider keeping Sopoaga for camp competition (or ask him to re-negotiate) if the team cannot re-work the deals of others.

Could be it many people including myself questioned if Sopoaga had some type of injury last season. If they cannot come to terms on a contract rework with Wilfork then they may allow Sopoaga the opportunity to compete for a job in camp. Outside of Wilfork, he is the only 3-4 NT 0Tech on the roster currently. Siliga has only seen reps as a 1Tech in his NFL career, and upper body strength was a concern for him entering the NFL.

Sopoaga could also offer some value as a throw in as part of a bigger trade, he is 32 years old, and his contract is manageable. Look at a 3-4 team like the Texans who is starting NT Earl Mitchell is a UFA and you think maybe you toss Sopoaga in as part of a Mallett trade and it adds some value for the Texans.

You had me, right up until the last sentence.

If I keep saying it, it will happen… My mom said I could make my dreams come true as long as I did not give up on them…:D
