Cassel has shown very clearly that he is not a NFL caliber QB. He hasn't led the Chiefs anywhere in the past few years.
Ni!!
I don't understand the thought process posters are having that Mallett is going to be worth a draft pick of significance. There is no body of work. That lack of experience does not equal a #1 WR, or even remotely anything close to a pick that would equal his original draft. As Mo points out, he's not likely going to see any work, with the exception of possible garbage time. Hardly a true test under game circumstances.
I suspect people are still in love with his college work or his combine workout (which I have no idea of his combine #'s). This guy could likely be Tom's successor, sure. He could also be Giovanni Carmazzi. We have no idea, and trying to put a high value on that unknown seems highly unlikely from my seat.
Cassel took the Chiefs to the division title in 2010
I like the idea, but I think you're dreaming if you believe we're going to get a high second rounder for him...
I've watched a fair bit of the Chiefs this season. Cassel has regressed terribly.Call me crazy, but I still think that Cassel is pretty good. Not good enough to put a terrible team on his back, which is what they need him to do over in KC, and certainly not good enough to overcome a different OC every year and Romeo's brand of terrible coaching... but good.

In theory, I'd like to keep Mallett around as heir apparent. In reality, without a body of evidence to judge, I haven't a clue if he'll ever live up to that title.
Cassel doesn't intrigue me in the least. Dude is one of the worst QBs in the league. Ditto Tebow.

In a nutshell, that was why I wasn't a huge fan of taking him in the 3rd. What likely scenario was there that he would be worth a 1st rounder in two years? (historically, Belichick has been able to trade picks for a pick one round higher the following season, so I'm using 1-round-per-year as the benchmark).
Really interesting question here.
The Pats have no 4-5-6 round picks, and no extra two's for maybe the only time in Belichick's tenure. He can't be happy heading into the draft with so few picks.
Mallett *might* represent a source of un-tapped value on the team that could be converted into a pick. If, as others point out, there is a desperate trading partner.
Then another question is would the Patriots be happier with Mallet at $800K or a third/fourth pick plus Cassell at $5-6mm. I think the answer to that is no. A mid-round draft pick is not worth $5mm in cap space.
It does seem likely that Belichick will attempt to convert some player/s on the roster into a pick, and Mallett certainly would be in the conversation. There really are not many others you could consider. Deaderick or Love? No market for Cannon. Fells or Cunningham? Otherwise you are looking at starters - few non-first-year depth players signed beyond this year. So you come back to Mallett.
That's a product of who we have on the team. Not the system.
The issue is whether Cassel is ready to accept a long-term role as a backup. I would welcome either an extension for Mallett or a long-term year deal for Cassel. Either would take us through at least 2016. Either would be a reasonable backup for Brady.
What part of backups never extend don't people grasp. They are either gone in search of a shot at starting elsewhere or flipped in trade or just gone, period.
No. I was talking about the idea of extending Mallett. Backups who have yet to start never extend. The only one who did was Manning's backup who no one wanted and he was gone less than a year into that extension. You really think that there is a big market for Cassel?
I would rather wait and see if he develops enough to possible become Brady's successor.
By all accounts he is putting in the work to become a good QB, the Practice player and some of BB comments speak well of his development. When Mallett'c contract ends Brady may be just a year or 2 from retirement and Mallett could be in position to become the QB for a stacked roster.
