Trading Ryan Mallett in the Off - Season

I'm pretty much convinced that Mallet is Brady's heir. He has enormous upside, physically, and shows flashes of competency.

Cassel has shown very clearly that he is not a NFL caliber QB. He hasn't led the Chiefs anywhere in the past few years.

I believe the word you are looking for is "ichy-ichy-ichy-pbootangggha."

I don't understand the thought process posters are having that Mallett is going to be worth a draft pick of significance. There is no body of work. That lack of experience does not equal a #1 WR, or even remotely anything close to a pick that would equal his original draft. As Mo points out, he's not likely going to see any work, with the exception of possible garbage time. Hardly a true test under game circumstances.

I suspect people are still in love with his college work or his combine workout (which I have no idea of his combine #'s). This guy could likely be Tom's successor, sure. He could also be Giovanni Carmazzi. We have no idea, and trying to put a high value on that unknown seems highly unlikely from my seat.

In a nutshell, that was why I wasn't a huge fan of taking him in the 3rd. What likely scenario was there that he would be worth a 1st rounder in two years? (historically, Belichick has been able to trade picks for a pick one round higher the following season, so I'm using 1-round-per-year as the benchmark).

Call me crazy, but I still think that Cassel is pretty good. Not good enough to put a terrible team on his back, which is what they need him to do over in KC, and certainly not good enough to overcome a different OC every year and Romeo's brand of terrible coaching... but good.

I like the idea, but I think you're dreaming if you believe we're going to get a high second rounder for him...

"The Brian Hoyer Syndrome"! Exact same talk/speculation about him in the pre seasom...now he is an assistant to the clip board holder in Pitt.

I've watched a fair bit of the Chiefs this season. Cassel has regressed terribly.

In theory, I'd like to keep Mallett around as heir apparent. In reality, without a body of evidence to judge, I haven't a clue if he'll ever live up to that title.

Cassel doesn't intrigue me in the least. Dude is one of the worst QBs in the league. Ditto Tebow.

This has been said by others before, but the time doesn't work out for Mallett to be Brady's heir.

Brady's 35 and playing at an insane level. If he retires at 40, you really think Mallett will be the backup for seven straight years?

Mallett is Flacco like in physicality. I have not seen enough of him actually playing QB against NFL defenders to have an opinion.

Mattie C has a track record that has deteriorated since '08 with 2 good years '08 and ''10. I would attribute his meh to the bad environment at KC, a complete disaster.

You don't think that the Chiefs will trade a high 2nd round for him and pay him $60 million? :D

I hear ya: Strong Argument.

1 ~ I think that it's pretty safe to say that nobody in all of New EngLand was more appalled, horrified, or flat out apoplectic about our burning a 3rd Rounder on Mallet than I.

2 ~ I didn't get the impression that there was a very rich Market for Trade Backs into the 2012 Draft, but I would've been happy to simply pick up a 2012 2nd Rounder from a contender ~ anticipating moving up from #74 in 2011 to #55 or so in 2012 ~ if they'd've thrown in a 2011 5th Rounder or some such...

3 ~ Better yet, if we could've Traded Down for a couple 4th Rounders. :D

4 ~ But of course there's no knowing what actually was On The Table. I get the impression that there's virtually always some Market for any given Pick. But what that Market is, can and does very greatly. And it's sometimes far less than what I like to call Book Value ~ what The Draft Value Chart indicates.

Really interesting question here.

The Pats have no 4-5-6 round picks, and no extra two's for maybe the only time in Belichick's tenure. He can't be happy heading into the draft with so few picks.

Mallett *might* represent a source of un-tapped value on the team that could be converted into a pick. If, as others point out, there is a desperate trading partner.

Then another question is would the Patriots be happier with Mallet at $800K or a third/fourth pick plus Cassell at $5-6mm. I think the answer to that is no. A mid-round draft pick is not worth $5mm in cap space.

It does seem likely that Belichick will attempt to convert some player/s on the roster into a pick, and Mallett certainly would be in the conversation. There really are not many others you could consider. Deaderick or Love? No market for Cannon. Fells or Cunningham? Otherwise you are looking at starters - few non-first-year depth players signed beyond this year. So you come back to Mallett.

Cassel isn't going to command much more than veteran minimum as a backup. That's the going rate for backing up a franchise QB. The few who are making more are doing so because those teams anticipated need. And even then you're talking $2M+/-.

1 ~ I think that Mallet's potential Trade Value does indeed come from what looks like a pretty barren QuarterBack Class: Supply & Demand working far more strongly in our favor than it would've, this past OffSeason.

2 ~ Even so, it's hard to imagine a great furor for'is services, if he doesn't pick up a Quarter or two later this month, and show some competence.

3 ~ But I wouldn't be surprised if somebody out there ~ one Head Coach is all it would take ~ doesn't get a little desperate, start watching old Tape of Mallett slinging it for Arkansas...make note of the fact that he has been a good, contributing Soldier who's gotten in good shape and gotten a Practice Player of the Week Award or two ~ large in the Intangibles Department ~ and talk themselves into making a play for'm.

That's a product of who we have on the team. Not the system.

No, with the exception of 2007 which was an unsustainable anomoly that has been the system. Ball control, risk aversive.

Cassel could always come back to the Pats to backup Brady again.

The issue is whether Cassel is ready to accept a long-term role as a backup. I would welcome either an extension for Mallett or a long-term year deal for Cassel. Either would take us through at least 2016. Either would be a reasonable backup for Brady.

What part of backups never extend don't people grasp. They are either gone in search of a shot at starting elsewhere or flipped in trade or just gone, period.

You really think that there is a big market for Cassel?

I would rather wait and see if he develops enough to possible become Brady's successor.

By all accounts he is putting in the work to become a good QB, the Practice player and some of BB comments speak well of his development. When Mallett'c contract ends Brady may be just a year or 2 from retirement and Mallett could be in position to become the QB for a stacked roster.

JMO.

No. I was talking about the idea of extending Mallett. Backups who have yet to start never extend. The only one who did was Manning's backup who no one wanted and he was gone less than a year into that extension.

I wouldnt put too much stock in that, BB has spoken well of players he then releases the next week. I have a feeling that what he says about a player is because of the effect it'll have on them rather than what he truely thinks.
