Is it Time to Bench Ellis Hobbs?

What the hell do you care?

Of course everybody has a bad game, or even a few bad games, but my problem with Hobbs isn't his tackling (although that needs some work as well) but rather the fact that he isn't really playing smart, and the truth is he's been consistently getting burnt this year. Let's call a spade a spade. If you go back over the past six games or so, he's gotten caught out of position a lot of times. Belicheck benched him at one point, and I really don't feel like he's made the case to stay in. I would put Chad scott in there and give him a shot at this point and maybe give Hobbs another chance next year without the cast.

That touchdown was terrible. That had nothing to do with a cast or underestimating Matt Jones' speed, he just got a move put on him and got badly burnt. I still think he's got the makings of a good player, but I have begun to question his instincts. The Patriots whole defensive philosophy is based on avoiding the big play, and there's been a lot of situations in which Hobbs has given that play up.

Again, I like the kid. I had great hopes for him this season, but I feel like he's the weak link. Hope I'm wrong.

incase u havent noticed..Scott has been getting burned more..thats why Hobbs got his spot back. and i think the TD did have to do with cast because he couldnt wrap up completely and Jones slipped through

Sanders also overpursued trying to get to the ball and he got caught out of position aswell when he ran up

Apologies if this topic has already been discussed, I haven't been on the board for a while, but I've noticed a pattern in the latter half of the season that ellis hobbs has really broken our backs in some key situations. He's out of position a lot, he doesn't tackle well, and generally it doesn't seem like he's playing smart right now. Do we want him starting in the playoffs going against Denver's deep passing game?
Broken our backs? You mean we aren't 11-4? MY GOD! What happened?

It is time to look again at the stats for our defense, and at real stat, wins and losses.

Some people cannot tolerate criticism. He is making an excellent point. Hobbs took a step backwards this year. He was benched for his play in favor of Chad Scott. When he was reinserted in the line-up, he continued his inconsistent play. He is capable, but making too many mistakes. Samuel is our best CB, and he got burned badly on a double move for a big gain. Scott is tough but lacks quickness. Going into the playoffs, I think our CBs are a vulnerability that a team like Denver will look to exploit. Going into the draft, we have said all year that CB and ILB are our greatest needs. The 2 areas I worry about with this team are:

1. On defense: Stopping the pass on the outside, esp Hobbs

2. On offense: no vertical passing game allows defenses to focus on 15 yards of the field ( a constant red zone look).

Yes, yes every team is flawed. But these are two areas I expect they will address in the off-season.

I'm missing this Ellis Hobbs implosion.

For a 2nd year player, I'm quite satisfied with his performance and the overall defense.

Weird thread.

It always amazes me when I log on to this board and see the threads that are started. Last week Hobbs was the darling of this board and this week he should be benched.

All you iHobbs fans should remember that it was the COACHES who benched him for poor play. Just a fact.

then why are the 'fans' trying to contradict the coaching staff now?

if they benched him for sucking before (which I do not recall), then wouldn't they bench him for sucking again if that was the case?

PS--what is with the divisiveness?? must one either be a Hobbs fan or Hobbs -unfan? I like the guy, and think he deserves to be on the field with the starting unit, but don't consider myself to explicitly be a 'Hobbs fan'. Can't I be a Dean Pees fan that is confident that the team is putting the best players on the field regardless of the 'fans' perception of who is healthiest, best, performing, etc? I like this defense. If Belichick and Pees feel that the best chance to win is with Hobbs on the field, then I am with them.

But don't let that stop any of you denigrators from caterwauling about it.

I agree. The moods swing so quickly.

We don't know if that was the case. John Tomase reported the Friday before the game that he was benched that Hobbs had switched from a removable cast to a hard cast. It could have been that he had a setback in his recovery.

Also, Seymour and, at least according to Deion Sanders and his inside sources, Maroney have been benched this season. I don't know if you can read too much into it. Since Seymour got benched for the second half of the Jets game, does that mean he sucks? If Sanders is correct and Maroney didn't dress for the Texan game because he was bench, does that mean he sucks?

Hobbs had one bad play against the Jags. Both Samuel and Chad Scott also had at least one bad play where they got burnt against the Jags. Maybe we should bench all of our CBs.

I'm with you ,yes they benched him and did not start him again on Sunday, but he came right in when the "D" came on for the second series.
Hobbs is FINE - courageous, admirable job this year with a cast on his arm - I see one terrific player.

Now - Denigrators & caterwauling !! THAT"S what I am talking about!!!!

Is Hobbs a shut down corner this year? No. Did we have expectations for him to evolve this year into a great player, considering he was the best story of the 2005 Pats. Yes. Is Chad Scott any better or any less flawed. No. For that matter, is Asante Samual really a pro bowl type DB? No.

Since Ty Law, the Pats have never signed or drafted a top rated DB and obviously have had a bit of success with the blue collar approach. Randall Gay, an undrafted FA on Owens in the Super Bowl. Tyrone Poole, Troy Brown, the current guys, whatever. We'll make it happen with what we got. Hobbs nor Scott are covering Harrison 1 on 1 in the second week of January, thats for sure. That being said, when Ty Law was in his prime, Romeo had so much latitude with his safety positioning, run stopping and blitzes because he simply didn't have to worry about Law being toast. Maybe we should use the Seattle pick on a stud to replace Samuel next April.

Good grief, where's all the angst coming from? Do you think the Pats are a league-leading defense ONLY because of the DL? Samuel has 8 ints and is good open-field tackler. Scott is one of the best at press coverage, and a decent nickel back. Mickens is decent. Hobbs is one of the quickest corners and for a second-year player coming off an injury, he looks okay. Not everyone can be a pro-bowl player, but Samuel WAS in the running. That's not bad at corner.

At safety, with Sanders, Hawkins, and for God's sake, Harrison, that's a strong trio.

Take a close look at some of Samuel's interceptions. He's incredibly quick and his hands are fantastic. If the Pats hold onto him, they don't need to draft a CB, at least not on the first day.

In a secondary like that, Hobbs is fine and will be better next year. And he's a heluva kick returner and good in kick coverage, as well.

Bench Hobbs for who, Earthwind Moreland? BTW, did Mickens play in the last game? I don't remember seeing him or having his name called on any defense plays - any stats on him?

Some of you guys have major personal issues. This is a website, on the internet, where people discuss a football team. Nobody's trying out for an ESPN column. Relax. It's just a discussion. If the thread irritates you, don't open it. Or write a letter to the editor.

I like Ellis Hobbs, but I've witnessed him give up a number of big plays, and I feel that he is the weak link on defense.

Your point was quite clear, but for the most part disagreed with by those that elected to reply in your thread. While you may have attempted to initiate discussion, I am under the impression that your preference for discussion on this topic would involve people agreeing with you.

I don't agree with you.

Ellis Hobbs is a 2nd year player that has had good plays and bad plays. The Patriots are clearly a better team with him on the field, or the coaching staff would have addressed this.
