Spikes: healthy scratch, injured, not yet in game shape, or ????

I guess the one thing I take issue with in this thread is the disparaging of Spikes the player. He started for the Pats as a rookie last year, and played well. Yes, he had some trouble in coverage--most rookie linebackers aren't perfect. In fact, for years Belichick simply didn't seem to want to ever draft linebackers because of how long it took for them to pick things up.

Now, for whatever reason, Spikes isn't playing. He was hurt and might need more conditioning, but I think it's a fair guess to say there's some attitude issues going on as well. If so, that's too bad, and we'll see what happens. But as promising as Fletcher appears, let's drop the "yeah, Spikes just isn't any good, Fletcher's obviously better, let's move along now" thing. It would definitely be better for the Pats to have Spikes an active member of the squad. Come on.

If Spikes starts and plays well everyone will be putting him in the HOF next week.

It is what it is.

Re: Spikes: an healty scratch or injured?

This is what is happening in the organization right now imo. I think the team wants players who are not quick to leave the facility right after practice. Players who aspire more to help the team in as many ways as possible. They expect this from the players they have drafted. If you can garner from Spikes time line on twitter, it appears he is the first to leave the facility right after practice to engage in God only knows what.

Every time he leaves whether through injury or suspension, he comes out of condition and I am basing this on the comments of the coaches. And I think it is a fair question to as how dedicated he is at this level?

Imagine if only he stay as Mayo does and study as hard as we have heard from BB as Mayo does. BB knows what it takes to be a champion and probably not seeing that from Spikes right now. It is not constantly tweeting your location on twitter.
We are showing or going to show that we can stop the run without him. He can't cover Wilfork if he was a receiver. So what good is he to the team?

I know we have some florida fans on this board so correct me if I'm wrong but, wasn't Spikes known as one of the hardest worker players on the team and he was a leader as well? Maybe he's changed I dunno just never heard anything about Spikes being lazy or a cancer before this year.

Could we have a moratorium on the phrase "it is what it is?" It's being used on here so much lately it's the equivilent of an extra point--it has no meaning.

I suspect that's not the word you're looking for. Though come to think of it, there always is a lot of grumbling here whenever new safety measures are added to the game, with nostalgia for back when "football was football."

if Spikes is odd man out it is because of the scheme change.... but @ Florida they were never in a 3-4 (were they?) I don't buy the does not fit BS. If anything the dude is good depth and has very solid instincts.

I bet we run more 3-4 formations than what is currently believed

Why do so many feel it's necessary to disparage someone's character just because they're disappointed by their performance? To me, Spikes is the biggest victim of the change in defensive schemes. His instincts and strength made him a good strong-side ILB in a 3-4, but his lack of speed hurts him as a 4-3 MLB. My guess is that's the reason he wasn't active Monday night and not that he's tweeting at all hours of the night He will be very useful when they play more run oriented offenses (if there are any in the NFL anymore) in the future.

The same thing can, unfortunently, be said of Ochocinco. Maybe, he's late getting to his spots not because he's tweeting so much that he doesn't know where he should be but because his 34 yr old legs just can't get him there as fast as they need to.

No, I know--I didn't mean there was anything particularly off about your use of it. It just seems to be the ending of so many posts now.

Rap Sheet says Spikes is taking a lot of reps with the first team today. Who do you think is going to be charged with thumping Tolbert in the ground game? That's what Spikes is here for.

That can't be true seeing as how Spikes is being "phased out" and "Fletcher passed him on the depth chart".

Good to hear. Deep inside me, I wish this guy all the best. How will Rap know this? Are the media allowed to watch practice?

Yup. Spikes is ahead on the depth chart roster for run game situations, when healthy. Most practice attendance evidence points to him recently recovering from injury.

I'm confident that the Spikes and Ocho worries will get resolved over the next few weeks of their contributions.

I just saw a Tweet from Spikes at 12:38 AM. I'd think that the night before a game he'd be trying to get some sleep. Then again, a few other Pats are Tweeting after midnight.

No way......... He's just taking reps with the first team because BB wants to make an example of him. He'll gonna getting cut right before the game. I have a 6th sense for these things........ Dude's a bust....... I can smell it after 17 games, most of which he started and did well in. Don't be fooled, it was a mirage.

On a related note......... @ochocinco tweeted right about midnight too. Very cryptic...... all it was this: ?

It's pretty obvious what that means..... After ignoring the playbook all week and only just now studying it for the game. He's trying to cram it in last minute. The ? obviously is a cry for help cuz he doesn't understand what he's looking at.

I know these things. Like I said, I have a 6th sense for reading tweets too.
