Jets window is now shut

I think they will sign both wrs and let Cromartie go.

Think of it this way :

By the time the Patriots have made their 6th (that's SIXTH) pick, the Jest will almost be ready to make their 2nd.

1a
1b
Jets 1
2a
2b
3a
3b
Jets 3

I know we'll trade a few of those but our draft day trades usually put us in a stronger draft position overall.

As for the thread, it does look good but teams determined to win now seem to find a way to self sustain that process. I want to see what they come back with before proclaiming them dead although some like 'Cro and Edwards would seem to be gone.

To heck with him. I felt that way a few years ago but he's teased us for years about how he loves the Patriots then he goes to the Jest. No room at my Inn for Taylor.

Well said!

I do think the Jets will concentrate on signing/beguiling enough of their free agents -- especially Cromartie, Harris, Holmes or Edwards -- to stay. Rex is the drawing card. What you don't get in money, Rex will make up by praising the players from the podium incessantly.

Well according to incarceratedbob's twitter (granted he isn't the best source because he as gotten A LOT wrong), Cromartie is done with the Jets because he got into a fight with Bart Scott on the flight home and it was was the last straw for Rex. I doubt the story is true until someone real reports it, it was a wonderful use of a second round pick.

I am not going to say their window is shut, but next seasons team could look a lot different at some key positions. Not only are Edwards and Holmes free agents, but so is Brad Smith. Cromartie is gone, hello Kyle Wilson :D. David Harris is a free agent, but I am sure they will have to franchise tag him, he is going to want more money then that Moron scott, who was ridiculously overpaid by the jets. Fun times ahead...

Scott is Rex's pet and mouthpiece.

The Jets knew that some of these players were probably not going to be coming back. They also don't know what the new CBA will be. No question that the under the old CBA that the Pats are in a better situation then the Jets.

With that being said they will re-sign either Braylon or Santonio and Harris. Cromatie and I believe Santonio will be let go because you just can't have that much money tied into WR/CB.

The players that concern me are Brad Smith, Eric Smith and Brodney Pool. The Smith's aren't anything more then average from scrimmage but their overall ability on special teams and to the roles they play on defense are offense are important to what the Jets do. Someone will probably offer Brad Smith more money then he's worth.

Taylor, Tomlinson, Ellis, Jenkins, Woody, Bryan Thomas, Richardson and Pryce may all see the door as well. They will get cap savings from players being cut, retiring or being restructed.

They will have to do a mini rebuild on the front 7 on defense over the next 2 off seasons. That's the only area on the team that will really be hurt by aging and the salary cap.

You guys love to trash our draft class from 2010 but Ducasse should be the starting right tackle in 2011, Kyle Wilson should take over for Cromatie, Mcknight should be splitting carries with Greene and John Connor will be playing fullback.

No question that Belicheck has put the Pats in a better situation going into 2011 but Ryan and Sanchez are only going to get better. They are 24-14 overall and 3-2 versus the Pats. They might take a slight step back in talent in 2011 but the Jets aren't going anywhere and neither are the Pats. The division is going to be a war for a long time.

Cromartie is a must sign since Wilson is not a replacement. Cro has mouths to feed, truly, so hopefully the Jets don't get a discount.

Don't worrying about the ink drying. Edwards will drop the pen before he can sign the contract.
Both of them are going to want ridiculous money. IF they want to keep either of them, given what the cap looks like, they will have to let a lot of players go. Diva WRs, even severely overrated ones, want the world in FA. And you can add Cromartie to that list too. Rex was gunning for the elusive SB, but many of his players had that huge contract in mind. Revis, Mangold and Ferguson got theirs in NJ. There may not be room for more, at least without some veteran cuts.

I dont think Cromartie is that overrated. While not as physical he can play alot of man coverage.

I don't think so. While the Jets could have some cap and free agency issues, I think the Jets should be very strong next year. If they can resign their FA's and address their lines, I think they have to be one of the favorites again next next year.

Ridiculous premise of a thread. The Jets have the two most important things that you need to be successful in this league: a good HC, and a good QB.

Rex has proven himself to be a good HC. And Sanchez has played well under the big lights. His two appearance in the playoffs have been pretty good and I see no reason why he should regress.

The Jets are a legit problem for us now and in the future.

"Ridiculous premise of a thread. The Jets have the two most important things that you need to be successful in this league: a good HC, and a good QB."

......and that leaves the New England Patriots with WHAT in comparison?

That's not quite the way it works though. They have $99M already committed to less than half a roster (80 or so per season including dead cap guys and PS and IR every season...). They could be looking at $30M or so under the cap but with more than 40 players to sign and few draft picks to fill in the gaps inexpensively... Guys like Santonio or Braylon or Cromartie aren't going to give Rex a home town discount in exchange for a gd snack and hollow promises of a ring. Revis deal is set up in a way that could result in another holdout for a restructure. Many of the gaps they will have to fill will require multiple millions. And those PSL's still haven't sold.

We are in way better shape cap and roster wise, and we have a boatload of draft picks they don't. We have two expensive UFA we need to retain in order to add via the draft. They have several. Our 2010 draft class showed exceptional development, their's bombed. You know what BB says, if you're not getting better in this league you're getting worse. We have the cap space and draft ammo to keep getting better. They don't. They will be hard pressed to maintain a close facimile to the status quo. As for attracting veteran FA dreaming of a ring, you can only play that "wildcard" so many times before the promise itself starts to ring hollow. Then you end up with guys really just looking for a solid gig with good pay and benefits like...snacks. As we found out... And when the going gets touch those guys don't rise up for you. That is why drafting well is so important.

I don't think anyone would argue that we aren't in way better shape cap-wise. But the numbers that you're citing assume that a number of Jets won't be cut; Tomlinson, Jenkins, and others won't be back, and that will free up a little space. Won't be much, and they'll be paper-thin, but it isn't quite as bleak as you portray it.

All that I was saying, though, is that they won't be affected by the rule that says that the final 4 can't sign more FAs than they lose--if that rule is even still in effect--since they'll be losing a ton of FAs in the first place due to the very mass exodus that you're talking about.

I think both teams have the recipe for success if you go by the top 2 on the field figures.

Thats the reason why the Dolphins and Bills will be looking up in the standings for the unforseeable future.

I get your point about the offense but the problem is this team right now doesnt have that speed on the outside at wr.I am not sold on Brandon Tate.:mad:I would draft another wr in the draft.

Taylor Price had the fastest 40 time at the 2010 combine. The kid can fly. Don't hope for a WR in the draft - hope that TP is the real deal. Since BB let Moss go in mid-season, my guess is that he thinks TP is the real deal (since TP was drafted to replace Moss).

To further emphasize the point of who is in better shape next year, jets or Pats and the forseable future for that matter, this guy did a pretty good breakdown of all 32 teams, notice the team salary per player graph

You have to get to the playoffs to perform well. In 2009, they backed in and shouldn't really have been there. This year they got in legitimately, but will they next year?

Random stats are not the best way to make an argument especially since in 2009 the Jets won on defense and the running game and Sanchez sucked for most of the year.

they back in again in 2010 if I'm not mistaken.

Let's cut through the BS: past two seasons they went to the AFCC game, we got knocked out in our first game. Which is better?

Well, he wasn't comparing the past 2 seasons. he went back 4 seasons.

What's better? Going 16-0 and going to the Super Bowl.

What the heck is the matter with you?

If you're going to change the guys question, what do you expect from me?

Agreed; going into this season, I thought he was pretty bad, but he definitely proved me wrong.

I think it overstating it to say the Jets window is shut. They will definitely have to retool their roster and let some older player go. They will likely take a step back talent-wise in 2011, but with a decent draft and some lower tier FA signings, the Jets will be in contention again next year IMO.

If he's not up on his WR, he sucks. He can't play off - at all. Peyton basically made him his *****.

The team with the rings - if you really want to cut through the b.s.

According to these pages:

New York Jets Salary Cap - 2011

New York Jets - Free Agents

Jets have around $118M in salary cap charges tied up with their top 51. Hard to know for certain just how much cutting will need to be done without a CBA negotiated yet, but the 2009 cap was $128M, and the Jets will only have their 1st and 3rd to find impact guys in the first 3 rounds.

The above cap charge doesn't include their free agent list, which is:

Unrestricted
Shaun Ellis
Steve Weatherford
Brodney Pool
Tony Richardson
Braylon Edwards
Wayne Hunter
Trevor Pryce

Restricted
David Harris
Robert Turner
Nick Folk
Antonio Cromartie
Lance Laury
Santonio Holmes
Eric Smith
Brad Smith
James Ihedigbo
Drew Coleman
Kellen Clemens

Exclusive Rights
Marquice Cole
Michael Turkovich
Marcus Dixon
