Something else to consider is that this was the Jets only opening to make a SB run and for one reason more than just all of their FA re-signings and the emotional letdown of this loss after all their bluster (and the difficulty generating that bluster they will face next year):

They gave the Pats a rival to destroy.

See, before this year, the Jets were just a team we despise and expect to beat twice a year. If we lose one, it sucks. But we expect to win 2/3 times. It's sort of like back with Indy pre-2006. We never built teams to target them or to beat them specifically. So when we lost to Indy in the AFCCG, what happens?

Belichick builds a leviathan designed to score enough points that no one -- and specifically Indy -- could never hope to lead a late-game rally like that to beat us again.

The Jets gave the Patriots a huge target to aim for this off-season, both specifically in a rival and as a defensive scheme to break. I expect to see major moves this off-season meant to put the Jets back into their hole for a long time.

And I think next year, we're going all the way. :rocker:

The Jets have 32 players under contract due a total of almost $99M in salary next season.
The Patriots have 46 under contract for $65.5M.

I don't know exactly how this translates to cap hit, but the Jets are relatively screwed when it comes to resigning guys.

David Harris, Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Antonio Cromartie.....they will be able to keep two at best.

Brad Smith, Shaun Ellis, Brodney Pool, Drew Coleman, Tony Richardson are some other FA's who's returns are questionable.

Over at GangGreen they are talking like it will be no problem to keep Santurdio and Edwards.

"Tanny is a magician with the cap".

Cro has 8 or 9 mouths to feed. He's out the door to the highest bidder.

One of Edwards and Holmes is gone.

    LT is done.

    Jenkins is done.

    Pryce is done.

    Ellis is likely gone.

    Brad smith is gone.

    Coleman is unlikely to re-sign.

Harris may command some pretty big money. He could be gone, too.

The rub for "Tanny" is they just emptied the vault for Revis and Mangold last summer. Hard to imagine them being able to shoulder the cap for all these guys.

I just have to think about it and smile. With all the talk of draft, and putting rookies on the field to make a difference, which rarely works. Sean, GW and BB are going to have a field day this year , with all of the FA's that teams can't pay for.

The funny thing is the Jets have done virtually nothing in the last five years that could be considered innovative. For whatever reason, Tannenbaum is a supposed genius. Why?

The only thing I'll give them credit for is some savvy drafting. Not to say it was really brilliant drafting because they had some pretty high picks to work with. They got Ferguson, Mangold, Revis, and Harris in the first round. I'd call Revis and Mangold great picks for where they were drafted. I don't see a lot of good late-round picks at all for the Jets, and I see a quarterback who has played well in big games but still has a QB rating of around 70. Point being that their drafting has resulted in some good players, but those players command high first round salaries and should be good.

Onto free agency. The Jets have not signed a single player for salary/compensation that can be considered a bargain. To recap some of their moves last year. Jason Taylor and Ladainian Tomlinson, paid way above the highest bidders. Santonio Holmes, traded for a fifth-rounder because no one wanted the headache; once again the Jets were the highest bidder; ditto on Braylon Edwards. Bart Scott, again the Jets were willing to pony up the cash. Antonio Cromartie, the Jets were far and away the highest bidder, again giving away a second-round pick.

Even in re-signing their own talent, the Jets didn't exactly get bargains with Mangold or (definitely not) Revis.

What's the point? Good teams typically draft very well, regardless of their draft position, develop players, and get great bargains on the free agent market. That's how you beat the cap. Don't mistake aggressive bidding and a win-now mentality for a solid long-term plan.

Look at all the guys the Patriots have who cost them virtually nothing and aren't giving them a huge cap hit. The Jets have very few of these guys. Logic tells me this will all catch up with them very soon.

We can't really make sure claims about any team until we've got the new financial parameters of the next CBA. There are just too many unknowns. For example: Kris Jenkins is due over $3.5 million. Does anyone expect the Jets to keep him around at that price if the cap is an issue? It's not as if they were unable to get by without him over the past two seasons, after all.

Question: Will the final 4 (Jets, Steelers, Bears, and GB) be restricted in free agency like they were last year, or does the labor situation change that?

Picks likely won't cost alot like they have in the past. Likely will finally be a rookie pay scale. For 2010 Patriots had 3rd lowest payroll in entire NFL.

Anyone know what the Jets draft pick situation is? I believe the 2nd is gone for Cromartie.

I agree with the first post. After winning last offseason with all big names, talking so much crap, hard knocks, beating the Colts and Pats and falling short again. Very hard to emotionally go through the same thing.

I dont know about that, the jet will be a thorn in the pats side until belichick and brady retire... The pats were scared of the jets last week, players coaches and it showed... Sanchez looks a gamer, as much i hate to say that but he looks the part.. The jets have beaten the pats 3 out of the last five.. granted we will be better in some areas, but right now both teams are even... but its a long offseason so we shall see...

As much as I dont want it to be this way, I do not expect the Jets to drop of significantly from this year. I think the Pats will be in a battle for years to come. The Jets are now a team that narrowly missed the SB 2 years in a row. Many players will put them on the doorstep to winning a ring. As much as we dislike him, Ryan is extremely popular as a player coach.

I think the NYJ could very well become a place were some Vets go for their last shot at a ring. I think players on the FA list will sign for less to stay there. Not all the players obviously but more players then we would like to see.

DO I think BB and Kraft do a better job managing a team? Definitely. But, Ryan and Tannenbaum(?) have made an inviting place for seasoned players.

I find it hilarious that the lowest teams on the payroll list are

NFL Green Bay Packers Team Salaries: $ 94,018,300
NFL Indianapolis Colts Team Salaries: $ 93,373,915
NFL New England Patriots Team Salaries: $ 92,734,120
NFL Baltimore Ravens Team Salaries: $ 90,713,965
NFL Kansas City Chiefs Team Salaries: $ 83,623,776

All these teams are playoff teams, just shows how important good management is.

Think of it this way :

By the time the Patriots have made their 6th (that's SIXTH) pick, the Jest will almost be ready to make their 2nd.

    1a
    1b
    Jets 1
    2a
    2b
    3a
    3b
    Jets 3

I know we'll trade a few of those but our draft day trades usually put us in a stronger draft position overall.

As for the thread, it does look good but teams determined to win now seem to find a way to self sustain that process. I want to see what they come back with before proclaiming them dead although some like 'Cro and Edwards would seem to be gone.

To heck with him. I felt that way a few years ago but he's teased us for years about how he loves the Patriots then he goes to the Jest. No room at my Inn for Taylor.
