Crable cut

To cut a third rounder before he plays out his rookie contract is not what you had in mind on draft day, obviously. This is the second such cut in as many years IIRC. It has to temper your expectations for Tyrone McKenzie or Brandon Tate at least a bit.

It's actually the third in as many years, if you count Chad Jackson.

That said, all three of those date from the Pioli years; seeing as every draft pick from 2009 is still on the payroll, I'm not quite as pessimistic.

It's a good point. Those last few drafts in the Belichick/Pioli era were notably bad, and make me all the more intrigued to see what the new regime has put together. I'm guardedly optimistic at this point, but we won't know much until we see how all the first and second-year guys do in 2010.

Good luck, Crable. Thought we really had something there with him, but ah well. Maybe someone we don't expect much from will set it on fire.

The Patriots have missed on a lot of draft picks in the last few years. May explain why they are a bubble team. If this years draft picks turn out than the team will be fine if not we will be in for along year.

It seems, right now, that we draft better without Pioli... good luck Crable, never saw much of you though.

The guy was around for THREE years. Its a matter of him not being able to stay healthy. He seemed to have talent, but just can't stay healthy, you can only hold a roster spot for so long.

I don't understand any of what happened around this guy. WHY did they hold onto him for so long and WHY couldn't he recover? WHY couldn't they see the writing on the wall with him? Would he not drink the Kool-Aid? Was he a loafer? I have little patience for players like this. Same thing with guys like Woods and Alexander. They seem stuck in some kind of purgatory, where they make the roster but somehow aren't solid contributors except for sometimes on special teams. Very frustrating.

A fabulous Pro career brought to an untimely and much too long delayed end
Shoulda run him off the roster last year
Waste of talent

My guess, and this is a total shot in the dark, is that he had enough base physical talent that he was worth stashing on IR where he couldn't take a roster spot anyways, but he just wasn't able to develop enough physically to get to a point where he would be any better than a JAG (too frail, skinny, not well-conditioned, who knows).

Basically, I'd guess that he stuck around for so long because there was no real cost to keeping him around. This was just finally the year where Belichick said that that was enough, and he's clearly never going to develop into much of a player, and that's that.

Woods and Alexander, IMO, are in a totally different situation. Their issue is that they just have a low ceiling, and will never be much more than they are. That said, they've reached that ceiling, and they're good enough players to make strong ST contributions and, in Woods' case, provide solid rotational depth at OLB. They'll never be starters, but at least they're worth roster spots. Crable, OTOH, maybe had the raw physical gifts to be a starter, but he didn't have the football skills to even make the roster.

Why? What was the cost of keeping him around an extra year? Belichick probably wrote him off after last year's TC, if not before, but there was no harm in giving him another year just in case he managed to put it together. You never know when you might have the next James Harrison on your hands, after all. Just because he didn't doesn't mean that it was wrong to give him that chance.

Just because they are on the roster year 1 or year 2, doesn't mean that they are good picks. Coaches need time to see how they perform and improve.

Crable didn't do any of that.

It's only a good point if 2-3 years from now, the guys from 09 are still on the team.

Well this isn't too suprising of news.

That leaves 1 starter (whos really good) from the 08 draft and unless Wilhite/Wheatley improve a lot, that draft was a big miss. I really hope the 09 & 10 drafts make for the past few years of miserable picks.

Hence the cautious optimism, as opposed to unbridled optimism. They've done well so far, but they're just getting started.

When I saw the title I thought "Wow,its so bad with fragile Shawn that when he gets a paper cut it gets attention"

My man, The Crab. So much promise, so little result. Assuming that Shawn failed the conditioning test by being out of condition and was not disabled by injury, read Bruschi's comments on the conditioning test. It's a matter of will and effort. Bru did not have kind words for those slackers simply unwilling to prepare themselves for competition.

Crable never displayed the fire in the belly that Harrison has
See his comments regarding training this off season
No sense of urgency
IMHO

If he failed the conditioning test he really deserved to get cut. Its not like he didn't know what to expect.

Think the '09 and '10 draftees will get the message? Welcome to the NFL. Perform or go.

News Note

Earlier this week the Patriots placed LB Shawn Crable on the PUP with what was disclosed as a yellow streak down his back.
Today the Patriots released Crable because of the miraculous disappearance of the yellow streak after he knew he would only be riding a bicycle beginning tomorrow.
