Re: Unnamed Team (Pats?) looking to trade for the Raiders #8 overall pick.

Not sure he would fit our 3-4? Could he play end in a 3-4?

All reports Ive read about him have him best suited as a 34 ILB since he lacks range.

Is that a Catholic school's bus, with a nun driving?

Yup, along with a couple of illegal firearms and a "God hates ***s" shirt.

Don't worry, be happy! When Coach drafts Tebow, everything will be fine.

By the way...Dez Bryant anyone?

Ohh, no no. I was talking about Suh. People were talking about trading up for him, and I just don't see how he'd fit into our system unless we switch to a more permanent 4-3. So I was wondering if he could play end in a 3-4? I'm guessing he has played 3-4 at Alabama with Cody at nose?

Wait, what? How am I a troll?
Was just joking.

Re: Unnamed Team (Pats?) looking to trade for the Raiders #8 overall pick.

we haven't had much of a pass rush to take pressure off the secondary. the problem is that BB hasn't been able to hit on a lot of picks over the past 5 years, especially in the secondary. pats could have had louis delmas last year (but traded down too much) or Jairus Byrd (picked at #42). both of them are better than Chung.

The Jets tried every way to blitz Manning and you saw what happened. NE used to give Manning fits just rushing 2 or 3 and dropping the rest in coverage.

Re: Unnamed Team (Pats?) looking to trade for the Raiders #8 overall pick.

I disagree. In my opinion the key to a good defense, and specifically a good pass defense in the current NFL is an effective pass rush. Pressure on the QB, forcing him to throw off balance or while being hit, or before a route is completed is going to yield better results than upgrades to Bodden, Butler and the other corners.

There's about a half dozen positions other than CB that are a bigger need.

Totally disagree.

First off, defense wins championships, that came directly from BBs mouth to Bob Kraft. That leaves 3 positions on the Pats where you would draft and pay a player that high: CB, OLB, DE. A shutdown CB is the key piece to a top defense. A guy that can work alone without Saftey help so you can roll coverage to other parts of the field.

NE had its best defense when Law was here and it allowed NE that flexibility.

If NE does not upgrade the CB position, this year, expect more games where NE cannot hold a lead and Brady has to be involved in a shootout like 2007. A Pass rusher is not going to get to the QB every time and teams will wise up and put whatever players necessary to take that guy out of the equation.

No, both of them produced more than Chung. Delmas started from Day 1 in Detroit, Byrd featured heavily for the Bills. The more gametime a player gets, the quicker they learn - even if they make costly mistakes along the way. Byrd got plenty of gimmie picks, by the way.

The other factor is that Byrd is a FS, Chung a SS. Different strengths.

It's not about sacking the QB every play, it's about collapsing the pocket, pressuring the QB and forcing him to get the ball off. If a NFL quarterback consistently has 4 seconds or more to throw the ball, he's going to beat you. This is half the reason why our defensive backs played so deep last season, to avoid giving up the big plays since opponents' receivers had time to get down the field and stretch the coverage schemes.

If we can manufacture a decent pass rush then you only allow the QB a couple of seconds in the pocket at most, which means we can be more aggressive with our coverage.

There is some ridiculous thinking out there that each defensive position can be looked at in isolation. This is crazy, and even more so when applied to the defense. The better the corners, the more time the QB has to hold onto the ball, the more chance the pass rush has to get there. The better the pass rush, the quicker the QB has to get rid of the ball, the more chance of forcing throws, leading to incompletions and interceptions. It's exactly the same on run defense, a good defensive line makes your linebackers look good and vice versa.

no but the last time we won against them in 07' the pass rush got to him at the end and they were able to force manning to fumble (where rosy picked it up). you can't blitz manning every down - the jets tried that of course and the lost but the saints didn't do that and won. it's all about timing. and if manning knows we don't have much of a pass rush, then he'll confidently pick apart our secondary.

it wasn't just ty law that made our defense. we had a great pass rush as well with guys like bruschi, seymour, wilfork, vrabel and willie mac. they forced qbs into bad throws where ty law was waiting for a pick 6. when the giants D pounded brady in 07', it was their D line that did it - not their DBs.

the most important position IMO in a 3-4 defense are the LBs.

There's NO CHANCE Suh makes it to 8. And he's about the only guy worthy of giving up that much pick capital to acquire. I think this is a smokescreen. Either that or the team moving up is not the Pats.
