Belichick: Defensive woes mostly correctable

something which bothered him equally

"I think there could have been an element of that. I think I would agree with Vince’s [Wilfork] comment on that that we probably didn’t do a good enough job of moving on to the next play. We might of let a previous play or two … You’ve got to learn from those plays, certainly plays that happen early in the game. They are significant because the team could come back and do it again, but at the same time you’ve got to be able to learn from them, put them behind you and move on – good or bad. I would say I probably would agree that we didn’t do a great job of that last night, that there might have been a residual effect on some of the plays that happened earlier in the game affecting, more than they probably should have, of how we played plays later in the game."

Correctable, huh? Unless they find a pass rusher (too late) high powered pass offenses will kill the Pats.

Sure could have used Vrable last nite, Bill.

To do what exactly? Take 8 seconds to get to Brees after he has released the ball? I loved Mike as much as the second bloke, but his time was done here.

What we need is a dynamic and young pass rusher(s), someone we hoped Crable would be, until it became clear he is inujry prone and probably won't be suiting up anytime before 2018.

Does "In BB, we trust" make me look 'smart'?

From reading your posts, which all seem to come in the wake of defeats, I don't really think there's much danger of anything you post making you look smart.

-------------

As someone else has said, not sure what people want BB to say here - that these problems aren't correctable? Hell of a message to send out that is. Chances are he's right too, to an extent - a lot of the defensive problems last night surely are correctable. Brees was brilliant and they have a ton of weapons, quite likely they would have found ways to score anyway but we gave them a major helping hand at times. The Henderson 75yd TD - that blown coverage is entirely correctable, it was just terrible execution from someone who has otherwise had a fine season.

They are who we thought they were! And we let them off the hook!

A year later, the same D went on to win the Superbowl.....

That wasnt the same D in 03 as the one we had in 02. Defenses ran all over us in 2002, i believe in preseason 2003 we acquired Ted Washington which was a huge acquisition and IMO and along with Rodney the biggest reason the D was successful.

The leader of our defense is 23 years old (Mayo). The leader of the secondary about the same. Like it or not, we didn't have a smooth transition, we went from a very old secondary and LBs to a very young one.

For a young defense, everything is correctable, they have a lot to learn. an we gel in time for the playoffs? I think so. Might we have some bonehead moments? Probably.

Remember, besides the youngsters, we lost seymour and have been experimenting with some sort of 4-3, 3-4 hybrid without a lot of experience outside linebackers for either scheme, but 4-3 DEs.

I think our D is going to be awesome in the future (Chung and Butler are still wet behind the ears). for this year, I think they'll make mistakes, but also make some athletic plays we haven't seen in a while.

I'm more worried about the offense. They shoud be the well oiled machine by now, yet they're pretty schizo week to week. Sure, they could use another WR, but they don't seem to use all the weapons they have, even when teams pile on Moss and Welker. Watson looked great earlier in the year, but he seems to be sleep walking again. No focus, no forcing the D to commit and countering.

This place is hilarious when the Patriots lose a game, or so much as get a TD scored on them.

Well of course they're correctible. As soon as we sign/draft some legitimate pass rushers, our defensive woes will be largely corrected. Not going to happen this year, but there's always 2010. As far as this year goes, we just have to hope that the offense miraculously reverts to 2007 form.

Have you ever seen a Pats defense get torched so badly before? I certainly haven't. I don't think any of us are calling it quits, we just realize that this team has a LOT of work to do if we are going to get to the Superbowl. I still have faith in this team and I still think we can win a championship, I just don't think our chances are as good right now.

Good lord. It's not that hard. We were all worried about whether or not the young defense was going to hold up, and for the most part, they've done very well this season. Most people forgot that we've got a lot of rooks and youngsters out there and then they were exposed last night, now all the sudden the sky is falling because "they are who we thought they were!!"*

*Proper use of quotation marks.

I wish everyone would try and curb their emotions for a moment and realize that the following post is much more than opinion...but the way things are:

And exactly why is the offense out of sync at times given the amount of experience on that side of the ball?

Thanks to RayClay for making sense.

To be fair, we also haven't faced an offense as potent as the Saints... ever. We were better in 2007, but obviously we don't have to face ourselves. The Colts in 03 and 04 were good, but I don't think as balanced and productive, and our defenses those year were world class. Hopefully we're in the process of building back up to that, but we're definitely not there yet.

Nothing that Lawrence Taylor vintage 1986 couldn't fix. :D

A perfect example of what is wrong with this fanbase.

How about the 29 points surrenderred in SB 38? The 40 points vs Colts 2005, or the 34 points vs the Colts in 2003?

Did they get torched? Well yeah

Has anybody stopped the Saints yet? Well, no... that's why they average 37 points per game.

Can your high jumper jump 50 feet verticle?
No
Oh, he sucks!!!!
Huh? Humans high jump 7-8 feet.
So what? He didn't jump 50 feet
But... nobody else can
What does that have to do with anything.

You kitties need to realize that that offense is going to score 30+ points on even "great" defenses. The key to beating them will be another great offense that scores 31+ points and controls the clock along with a defense that will create some turnovers.

The Pats seemed to have hung 38 points on an opponent in week 17, 2007.

Oh no, now most kool-aid drinkers are going to have a sigh of relieve and start preaching "In Bill we trust". Sorry Bill, for most of us, your tricks won't work anymore. As you say Bill, "It is what it is", and the defense just isn't very good.

Well, Belichick has flicked the switch on a pass rush before. People forget that the Pats had a worse pass rush in 2005 and during halftime of the Chief's game he did something and turned a passive defense into an agressive dominant defense.

There is no guarantees he will do it again, but I wouldn't write the guy off yet. Belichick has done enough for this team for us to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Last time I heard that was in 2002 when the run defense was a sive and BB said that there was a combination of technique and alignment issues that are easy to fix.

So when is BB hiring Karl Rove to spin this one?

The last time I heard that was 2005 and Belichick fixed the defensive woes during halftime of a game.
