If the pats get pep they will be the most talented team in NFL history.

On paper at least...I was thinking the same thing.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

sign Peppers, trade Seymour and the other second to move up and grab Maluaga:D

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

If the patriots are able to sign Peppers to a long term deal after trading for him (if it all comes true) and he is willing to convert to OLB, our defense is going to be in great shape for 2009.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

FWIW, Miguel has the Patriots at $7.8M under the cap right now :

"The following figures include the cap impact of the Fred Taylor, Leigh Bodden and Greg Lewis acquistions and my guesstimates at the cap impact of the James Sanders, Nathan Hodel, Russ Hochstein, Shawn Springs and Chris Hanson signings. My numbers do NOT include the cap impact of the Mike Wright and Joey Galloway acquistions. According to my figures the Patriots' 2009 cap figure is $121,107,298 with 60 signed or tendered players. The 2009 salary cap is $127,050,000. The Patriots' 2009 adjusted cap is $128,884,466. I like to thank Adamjt13 for providing the information about the Patriots' adjusted cap number. So I have the Pats under their adjusted cap by about $7.8 million."

So they could do this and "only" have to open up enugh cap room for the draft choices if you assume they could do a long term deal with Peppers that had a cap hit the first year of about $8M which would be doable with a big signing bonus. They'd have a bit of work to do to open up the room for the draftees but they could do it especially as the roster would be some kind of complete after getting Peppers.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

We can do a Haynesworth style deal.

Sign him for five years. Give him a $10M signing bonus. Give him a guaranteed convertible $30M option bonus due in 2010. Give him a $1M salary in 2009 using option bonuses and other creative devices to push future compensation above the 30% limit.

Final 2009 cap hit: $3M

Aight.. I'll bit.. :)

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

I like that idea. Haynesworth style deal... I do not see haynesworth getting all the money he signed for anyways

No point in trading Seymour, we would be locked and loaded for 2009, let Seymour play like a beast in a contract year.

No question in my mind what is going on......Giselle is making this purchase. www.pillowtalk.organ is out with this scoop.."My Tommy needs a new ring so this will be my wedding present to him, plus a new man purse."

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

This would likely mean that Wilfork will not be getting a new contract?

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

The question is IF we do get Peppers and sign him to a deal, do we still go after Taylor? Would he agree to a deal making little money for a chamionship run? Think about THAT!

I do agree that either way, we do have to trade Green or Bruschi for a pick or someone else to make this deal work financially. I don't see the cap figure working with our current roster AND fitting in Peppers..... but if this goes through, we might be looking at one of the greatest teams, on paper at this point, ever assembled

I would be happy to get Peppers OR Taylor. Trying to get both is just getting greedy. Give the other 31 a pinhole of light at the end of the tunnel.

It's bad enough that we are thoroughly stamping out their hope and dreams, there is no need to pull out a copy of the Herald and take a big dumb on their poor little squashed hopes and dreams. (PS - The Herald is for wiping not reading)

Re: NFL network : Peppers close to going to NE for #34 !

Fine with me. How do we afford him? What is our cap space?

This is what I am thinking we do not have 16 million (do not know the exact number but it is alot). I just cannot see this happening as it will lead to someone being cut for an unproven OLB. I say we look at the draft and see how our young guys have developed instead of big money although I recoginize his talent. Jason Taylor is a way cheeper option for them.

No I always throught that was a bad idea. he is too cheap right now AND its a contract year, he's playing for a big contract like Seymour. They'll be hungry and play hard!

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

I can hear it now... "Would you like a little Mayo or Peppers with that?"

g ;)

As stated, that $7.8 number is without the Galloway and Wright signings, which will take up, I'd say, at least $2M in cap space, even considering the Top 51 rule. Plus you're gonna have the rookie pool, which will be in the neighborhood of $2.2M.

Keep in mind Brady has a $5M base salary for 2009, so potentially some of that could be converted into signing bonus which would be prorated over the 2 years remaining on his contract. I'm just not sure if the Deion charge or 30% rule will apply.

While were on the subject of trades, wonder if anyone is willing to give us a first for maroney.

The only way this deal happens is if the Pats have a long term deal in place. Otherwise, they have no way to fit Pepper's 16.25 million tag number under their cap.

Peppers has to agree to a deal that would have a cap hit in the 3-4 million range this year. That's the only way this deal gets done.
