We have a good defernse but nobody that's mean!
Anyone remember Ray Nitschke ? That's what I want on our team.

Seymour, Wilfork and Vrabel aren't "mean"?

Did you ever watch Nitschke play? NO; they are not mean.

They are very good and Wilfork may have some mean in him but certainly not Seymour.

Funny, that's not what their opponents say.

hmmm.......

Too bad you never seen Nitschke play.

Oh, stop.... You've gone from "mean" to Nitschke. Well, there's only one Nitschke, just like there's only one of everyone who's ever played the game, so nobody passes that part of the test. The rest, Wilfork, Seymour and Vrabel pass with flying colors.

forget agrssive style and scheme..if they can just improve their tackling they can be a impactful defense. how many missed tackles resulting in big plays have we seen in the last two yrs ?
2007/2008 has to be worst tackling pats teams i would think

Even BB said our tackling was in need of improvement and it's true. Maybe that goes along with being aggressive or maybe it doesn't but either way missed tackles has been an area of concern.

I think we have a great D and next year should be even better but it has some areas that need improvement. This year we had so many injuries it's hard to use 08 as an example of our overall D but I think BB addressed a lot of needs last year. We had an awesome draft and we've got rookies who did an outstanding job imo.

Watching the Ravens vs Miami then watching the Steelers (TroyP) reminded me of how the Pats used to make those big plays on a REGULAR basis and at crunch time too. Now they still make plays but it's no longer a given that we will.

I don't think it's about wanting "perfection",at least not for me anyway. I just love defense :) I'd take a good-enough or very good offense with a shut out D over an outstanding offense with a good enough D anyday, but that's just me:D.

I always wondered if a Belichick defense with the Patriots could be like, say, the Ravens D.

I'm thinking, no. The Patriots D does get under a lot of other players' skin, esp. Seymour and Wilfork.

But, as its been described in the past, it's a thinking man's defense. The Patriots' D is like a boa constrictor that comes at you strategically and slowly squeezes the breath out of you.

Mind you, Wilfork, Seymour, Harrison, are nasty players, but Ty Law, Bruschi, Warren, Vrabel, these guys just made things difficult on you as they were better prepared and always in the right spot.

this is what we do...
Sign

Dunta Robinson
Mike Brown or Sean Jones
Karlos Dansby or Channing Crowder
Trade for Julius Peppers
Draft Outside LBS
Get younger at DL and SS FS

there we go... Defense is fixed
[sarcasm on]

Then we cut Cassel, Moss, Maroney, Welker, Jordon, Smith and Faulk because they don't fit under the CAP.

Great Idea! Einstein, !?!. ;):p

[sarcasm off]

Seymour, Wilfork, Vrabel, Thomas, Bruschi, Harrison and Meriweather are all hard hitters. Warren, Green and Mayo may be a bit less so, but they are still plenty aggressive. Some of the perception has to do with the injuries this year. We still were reasonable statistically.

I would match our front seven against almost any team. As with any positions, we need to develop youth. Maybe Mayo, Guyton, Woods, Crable and Redd are the players of the future; perhaps not. However, they are reasonable developmental players to mix with the veterans. Obviously, Mayo has already become a starter. Guyton is well on his way.

I do indeed think that aggressiveness (and competence) is a problem in our secondary. I miss having veteran leadership back there. At one point we had 5 first rounders in the defensive backfield. Then we had aw and Milloy. The emphasis of the defense has moved. We need the secondary to be able to play man and to run blitz. I DO AGREE that if we used two of our first three picks for a physical corner and physical safety, we would be a much better team in 2010 yhan with almost any other use of the picks. Alternatively, we could find the safety in free agency and draft an ILB.

I remind one and all. Those heady, emotion-filled, nasty, agressive, attacking, fearsome, blitzing Defenses  of the mighty Ravens and Eagles... gave up 23 (could have been more) and 32 points respectively.

They are TOAST and DONE for the season.:eek::eek:

A thinking defense, perhaps. But BB's classic defenses with the Giants always brought plenty of physicality, toughness and intimidation. LT, Harry Carson, Carl Banks and Pepper Johnson brought plenty of intensity and nastiness. Jim Burt was as tough as they come. Not to mention Leonard Marshall. BB's Giants scared people (remember Joe Thiesmann's open fracture?) and out-toughed people. Their 15-13 win over the 49ers in 1991 was a classic example of toughness over pure speed and skill. Marshall's crushing hit on Joe Montana would have fit in nicely in the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game.

I don't want "the Raven's D", per se; but a bit more aggressiveness, intimidation, and playmaking would not be amiss. It's not a chess game.

I don't think I have any special knowledge ... others probably have much more. Herzlich from BC seems like that kind of player, though he's staying in school. Aaron Curry is very intense, but will almost certainly go top 10. Maualuga is intense, but I doubt he has enough control to go with his chaos.

I tend to like very high motor players like Connor Barwin, Cliff Sintim, Paul Kruger, and DJ Moore over possibly more athletic players who seem more inconsistent (both in play and in motivation) such as Michael Johnson, Tyson Jackson and Vontae Davis. Players with an inconsistent motor and "unlimited potential" (like Vernon Ghloston last year) scare me. But I'm no expert.

That is why I like Lauranitis, who may fall to us or with only a minor move up. He is controlled meanness, with a brain. Tough Thinking-man's Defense starts at the ILB spots, the DL, and S. We have 5 of the 7 spots with young Class A players. Two to go. (and mayhap Rodney Returns making it 6 of 7!)

A Safety would be nice but Mays didn't come out; and he was the only certain pro-bowler, there, at S. So I want that other ILB. A big,(245+) fast, (sub 4.6), smart, tough, ILB, student of the game just like Mayo ... Lauranitis.

Nice one,Up:rocker:

Not to beat this thing to death, but here's what Mike Reiss had to say on the subject in today's mailbag: "My hope is that this issue of the Steelers' defense and its style -- and how it relates to the Patriots' style -- becomes a more detailed story at some point this offseason. I think it's a good one. To answer the question briefly, I believe it's a combination of all three elements you mentioned -- players, scheme and play-calling. Forced to choose one, I'll take the players at the top of the list. Having a Troy Polamalu at safety allows a defense to be a bit more aggressive. Drafting someone like LaMarr Woodley in the second round -- and developing him in your attack-based scheme -- is another example of good scouting. It's an attitude of sorts that can permeate through an organization, and I think it's an attitude the Patriots are going to try to adopt this offseason. I expect their priorities to look something like this: defense, defense, defense."
Some areas to be addressed - Boston.com

I hope he's right.

The problem is that we have these old LBs.I like Teddy alot but i think its time to start these young LBs.

When you have a play maker at safety, you can be aggresive. We need to sign an effective SS next to Merriweather.

We need pass rushers to disrupt timing, force bad throws, etc.

Both of those things we lack severely.

Yes, while our defense has been done for 3 weeks now.

Re: I want teams to fear our defense... NOT!!!

Despite all that newness, they still finished as the Top Ten Defense; and top 8th in points allowed.

Football is a game of field position. If your offense moves the ball well, your defense consistantly has more field that they can give up before giving up points.,

If you think the patriots had one of the top 8 defenses in the NFL this year, frankly, I think you're nuts. I'm not even convinced they had one of the top 25.

Football outsiders says 20th overall, 27th against the pass.

Teams used to always lose the week after playing the patriots because the Patriots were always the most physical team on the field......I think they have lost that somewhere.
