i bet there is a 99.9% chance the Chad Johnson trade wishes come up shortly after the season is over. And I believe Cincy will probably be willing to deal him now. We should give a 2nd round pick for #85 and line him up opposite Moss. Moss NEEDS a threat opposite him to take the double and tripple coverage off him, adding someone like Ocho Cinco would easily do that, not to mention free up Welker more. Plus Gaffney needs to be upgraded to. Chad Johnson wants to win, he wants to play for a contender, and hes wants a ring too. #1 priority this offseason should be sending a 2nd round pick (possibly the Chargers pick which looks to be high in the 2nd round) for Chad Johnson.

That would be awesome, having CJ and Moss and Welker. Plus the Patriots have Cassel as trade bait, and if the Bengals can promiss Cassel that he will the the number 1 QB I think Cassel would be willing to get tagged and then traded. Cinci would love to have a QB knowing that they can trade Carson away or have him play back up.

I highly doubt Asomugha ends up here. He will get paid at least what Asante is making and we weren't willing to pony that up for a guy who's played in the system for 4 years.

Definately need to look at those RB's. If Morris misses anymore substantial time this year I truly hope we part ways with him, even though he's a great runner let's get somebody who will stay on the field. Ditto for Jordan. So far Arrington, Fred Jackson, Buckhalter, Maurice Morris are intriguing. Jacobs and Stephen Jackson likely too expensive. Edgerrin James may be a cap cut in Zona too, worth a signing for the right price IMO.

As was mentioned previously, Jacabs already signed an extension. If you are weary of players being able to stay on the field, then Buckhalter is not one of the players you want.

I also don't think that James has much, if anything left. Maurice Morris might, but I'd rather the Pats grab another youngster in the draft.

I just don't see it happening. Sorry Briz. Besides the fact that I can't see Johnson checking his ego at the door, there is the money issue. What's his current contract like? Can the Bungals afford to take the cap hit of trading Johnson.?

FWIW, I always take metrics w a grain of salt, but I checked Asomugha's #s for last season, and no matter what you think of metrics, they are impressive. If for no other reason than teams only threw the ball at him 38 times in 16 games. Wow. Of those 38 passes, only 15 were completed. The average yardage on the completion was a measly 5.8 yards.

Asante Samuel, for comparison, had the ball thrown at him 81 times. 40 of them were completed. The average completion went for 6.3 yards. Asante Samuel got 57 milli over 6 years, with 20 guaranteed. Wonder where that puts Asomugha.

Chad Johnson + moss and welker with a good Def. draft would equal 19-0

Why would the bengals trade away Carson Palmer?? He is among the top QBs in the league and has hardly been the problem in Cinci.

As one Winnipegger to another, please don't fall into Mesoslo's ignorant posts. This guy has nothing to add to our threads. Look at all of his stupid suggestions from last year's draft forum and brace yourself for this years draft forum with the possibility of trading Cassel set in his sights.

yup, and up to this previous week, opponents had thrown the ball to his side ONLY ELEVEN TIMES ALL SEASON...

and i dont think the fins tried it...so that 38 will be less this time around...prob wont even hit 20

can u imagine? not having thrown the ball to ur side 20 times in a season?

I don't think it's right but KFFL lists Bart Scott as a FA. I checked Rotoworld and it said that Scott signed a 3 year deal in '06. So if he's a FA after this season, would make a great combo with Mayo along inside and having Guyton come in on passing downs. If not, I like Channing Crowder to play along Mayo inside. Also, I like Jermaine Phillips or Sean Jones at SS. This will allow Merriweather to play FS full time and Sanders can do spot duty. For CB's I like Chris Gamble, Jabari Greer and Dunta Robinson. However, Robinson is a huge injury risk. For O-line, I like Mark Taucher who has been a solid pass blocker for Green Bay for a long time.

BradyManny - Where to do get those stats? I'd be very interesting in the link.

Thanks

You can actually browse the "Football Outsiders Prospectus" for 2008 on Amazon.com (if you have an Amazon account). You can then search for any player and it'll take you to the page that has his metrics.

DBs is probably by far their most worthwhile, b/c metrics for the other positions can become misleading or inaccurate, IMO. For DBs, they have stats on number of passes targeted at them, success rate of the defender at preventing a completion (ie, for Asomugha, he had a 61% success rate, which means only 15 of the 38 passes were completed his way), and the yardage of those completions, among other numbers. It's worth checking out.

Here's PFW's list of '09 FAs, by position:
Features - NFL pro football articles and coverage from Pro Football Weekly

My take on some of the names on the list:

QB: a new backup will be needed after Cassel leaves. How about Chris Simms? There's the BB-Phil Simms connection, and he was playing fairly decently until his spleen injury. Other possibilities incl. Fitzpatrick, Leftwich, Garcia and McCown.

FB: I've always wanted Neal & Richardson, but they're really old now. Evans is probably the best choice, though I don't know some of the others very well. Glass Morris has also played FB, in case the Pats want to go w/o a true FB. Cecil Sapp is another RB/FB, but is he a better blocker than Evans?

RB: not much room here if LaMa, BJGE & Faulk all return, though I could find room for Darren Sproles, who would be our 3rd-down Back of the Future & Returner Extrordinaire.

TE: Non-Blockers Need Not Apply; Watson & Thomas already fill that bill. I'm thinking more along the lines of Kleinsasser, Tony Stewart, Mark Campbell & Joel Dreessen, though DT's UT teammate, Bo Scaife, is having an excellent season for Tennessee.

WR: if Gaffney re-signs (which might be the best move anyway), then there's not much room here, either. I would rather see the FO draft a WR in the mid/late rounds, and pray that he develops better than the last 3 drafted WRs. TJH will be too expensive for our tastes.

C: I have not considered this position in the past, but Koppen's performance so far has been troubling. The FO should at least consider Matt Birk, Jake Grove & Jeff Saturday. And I wouln't mind seeing old friend Grey Ruegamer return in place of Hochstein/Yates.

G: not much here; a draft choice should def. be invested in this position. Elton Brown might be the most interesting name on this list as a possible Steven Neal backup/replacement. Jason Fabini could be a RG/RT backup; he & BB were w/ the jesters in '98 & 99. Adrian Jones could be a LG/LT backup. And what does Pete Kendall have left in his tank?

T: quite a few very interesting names here, though most of them play RT exc. for Khalif Barnes, Tra Thomas & maybe Jordan Gross. The FO should keep its eyes open in case somebody can be signed if The Price is Right.

DE: Chris Canty, CJ Mosley & Igor Olshansky would be upgrades over LK Smith & Wright, but would also be more expensive, esp. Olshansky. A mid-round draft choice might be the way to go here.

DT: Haynesworth will be too expensive. Older Grady Jackson & younger Jimmy Kennedy would be viable vet backups. A late-round/UDFA-type is a possibility.

ILB: Dansby is my best-case signing, but that ain't happening. Eric Barton & Channing Crowder would be weakening division foes at the same time. Andra Davis has played for RAC the past 3 seasons. Mike Peterson could be on the outs in Jax. Bart Scott is an a-hole, and Ray Lewis is a murderer (allegedly). And look, Adam Seward is now Unrestricted.

OLB: IDK if the FO will invest heavily - either in cash or in draft picks - at this position; AT is signed for big bucks, and Crable is the future at the other side, but will he be ready next season? A vet to serve as a bridge from Vrabel to Crable should be a high priority. Suggs will be too expensive. Darryl Blackstock played for Al Groh at UVA. Bert Berry may have injury issues. Michael Boley may be the best overall fit. Woods, Redd & Darrell Robertson can vie for the #4 OLB spot.

CB: the first thing the FO needs to do is stop chasing after injury-prone midgets. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, let's see who's available. Forget about Asomugha; more realistic expectations might be Chris Gamble, Corey Webster, Bryant McFadden, Eric Green, Travis Daniels, DeAngelo Hall, D.Foxworth, Ron Bartell, Jabari Greer and Dunta Robinson. In addition, a high draft choice also needs to be invested in the position. Before the start of next season, the FO must find at least 2 quality CBs to replace O'Neal & Webster, and to supplement Hobbs & Wheatley. I would prefer 4, but would be OK w/ 3. 2 is the no-brainer minimum; otherwise, meaningful snaps would be given to the drek that is Wilhite & Richardson.

S: A play-making SS to replace Rodney should be one of the FO's highest off-season priorities. Lil' Jimmy Sanders is not the answer. He is, at best, a #3 S on a PO team. A high draft choice should be used, plus at least one quality FA SS. The most visible name is Brian Dawkins, who by now must be sick of the Reid/McNabb fiasco. But what does Dawkins have left in the tank? Other, younger possibilities incl. James Butler, Jermaine Phillips, Gerald Sensabaugh, Sean Considine, Michael Boulware, Josh Bullocks, Sean Jones and Darren Sharper.

Finally, Shane Lechler is a UFA; so is Craig Hentrich. Both would be upgrades over the inconsistent Chris Hanson.

After watching his miserable performance vs. Pittsburgh, I am taking Ryan Fitzpatrick off my list. Multiple batted balls, no rollouts, short-hopping targets - fuhgeddaboudit.

Dude, in fairness to Fitzpatrick, his O-Line was freaking sieve.

I don't think that the OL was pass-blocking that badly, considering. Fitzgerald just doesn't seem to have adequate pocket presence, esp. for his inadequate height.

I don't, they started holding the left-side blitz off and Fitzgerald was making good reads. Sadly, Mr. two-catch had KY-Hands.

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. It seems that anyone who leaves under bitter circumstances never returns.
