OVERALL SUMMARY:

Bill Belichick put together a solid draft class with his 2022 Patriots Draft Picks, although he still surprised people with his selections. The team didn’t target an offensive tackle, wide receiver, or a cornerback during the early part of the draft. In fact, the Patriots caught people off guard when they picked offensive lineman Cole Strange in Round 1 of the 2022 NFL Draft.

That move by Bill Belichick was definitely a surprise as Strange projected to be a later pick. However, there were whispers several teams potentially had an interest in Strange in round two. As a result, the Patriots used what was basically an early second round pick and took the standout from Chattanooga.

It’s a great pick if it pans out. His addition would solidify the inside of their offensive line for the next five years. He’s projected to be a left guard, which with his aggressive style of play adding a nasty presence next to center David Andrews.

The Patriots added speedy receiver Tyquan Thornton in the second round. The standout from Baylor ran a ridiculous 4.28 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He also put up an incredible 36.5-inch vertical jump and a 130-inch broad jump.

University of Houston standout, third-round pick Marcus Jones, is intriguing. He fills two roles, having been both a solid cornerback and a terrific presence in the return game. He also saw time on offense during his career.

The Patriots had three fourth-round picks, adding Arizona State cornerback Jack Jones, South Dakota State running back Pierre Strong Jr., and Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe.

Jones is a solid cover corner, but he’s had some issues during his collegiate career that could make him a question mark.

Strong Jr. tied for the fastest running back in the 2022 NFL Combine and adds some depth to a backfield that could use it. James White suffered a devastating hip injury in 2021 and his status is in question heading into 2022.

Last season saw the emergence of Rhamondre Stevenson, which makes him an intriguing player to watch heading into 2022.

Meanwhile, Zappe was outstanding last season. The former Hilltoppers quarterback broke Joe Burrow’s collegiate record after throwing 62 passes in 2021 along with 5,967 yards over just 14 games. He’s expected to potentially compete with Brian Hoyer for the back up role behind Mac Jones on the QB depth chart.

The club then had three sixth-round picks, selecting South Carolina running back Kevin Harris, Northwest Missouri State’s Sam Roberts, and LSU’s Chasen Hines.

Harris is a strong back who runs with power and like Damien Harris, does a good job once he gets into the second level. Roberts is a Cliff Harris Award winner who was outstanding last season. He stood out in a Division II Conference where the defensive tackle completely dominated. He blew up plays while being extremely disruptive, especially on special teams

They finished things off by adding offensive lineman Andrew Stueber, which gives them some additional depth. Stueber, who played tackle at Michigan. He’s another big player, coming in at nearly 6’7? and weighing 325lbs.

Overall, it’s a roster that now has some terrific pieces. The next question is how they’ll each fit in when Belichick starts putting the team together in the coming months.
