Your Ideas To Improve Hockey

Are Patriots fans really THIS bored with winning?

new guy thread starting frenzy disorder, Shmess....hopefully he calms down in a month or so..

1. Eliminate the 3rd-man penalty during fights; dirty little Montreal Scabs will be less inclined to take cheap shots.

2. Reduce the size of goaltender equipment, especially their leg pads and - most especially - their catching gloves.
I want every inch of a goalie's body to be protected, but not one inch more.

3. Change the shape of the puck from that of a disk to that of a ball. The stick-handling, passing and shooting would improve tremendously,
while player safety would also be improved by eliminating the puck's edges.

4. Eliminate penalty time carry-over from one period to the next; if a penalty was committed during a particular period, then the entire penalty must be served
during that same period, even if that means extending the length of that period. The same rule would apply to a penalty committed before the end of regulation time.

5. If penalties of violence (slashing, roughing etc) were committed, the penalized team would not have their player returned until the full penalty time was served.

6. Force a team killing a penalty to move the puck past their blue line before clearing it to the other end. This used to be an old WHA rule, IIRC.

7. If a puck is iced, then play stops as soon as it crosses the goal line, exactly as it is done in college.

8. Allow the goaltender to be treated - and body-checked - exactly the same as any other player if the goaltender leaves his protected crease area.

Regarding #8, I don't know if the rule changed, but unforgettable play from the old Forum in '73 when Don Marcotte checked Michel Plasse behind the net, stole the puck, and as LaPointe stood in a ridiculous goalie stance fired it right past him for I think a SHG. Just thinking about that one brings a smile, fuhget about the butt-fumble...

As far as seriously improving the game, flush Bettman & Co. down the toilet. Back in the 70's, they actually bothered to poll the players as to what they thought about requiring helmets and reducing fighting. Their overwhelming response was that there would be a huge spike in vicious, career-threatening cheap shots. Surprise, surprise, they were exactly right. And that's the product you have today.

Thanks for the reminder about Bettman & the empty suits that followed him from the NBA. His mindless expansion into markets that will never, EVER embrace hockey, his elimination of legitimate fighting,
his creation of overtime/shoot-out circuses, and his watering-down of the regular season for the olympics & more outdoor "classics" has turned him & the league into jokes.

More ways to improve hockey:

9. Fire Bettman and all non-hockey people from League HQ.

10. Stop expansion into Las Vegas, and move the franchises stuck in Glendale Arizona, Sunrise Florida, and Exit 16W to Quebec City, Seattle, and one of Salt Lake City/Milwaukee/Portland Oregon.

I think the first step, is to educate the public about the things you said. Everything people see and hear on TV and radio does not point out those facts. It's a problem not limited to hockey.
