This article has made me come to grips with what is a possibility: the Pats lose Brady for the year with a knee injury.
I'm not saying that Yahoo is a reliable source because I have seen some horrible articles by Yahoo. Nonetheless, I'm not holding onto the hope that Brady can come back and I want to move to the area of "what next".
First of all, this is why Cassell wasn't cut. Cassell has more experience in the system and give Daniels more to work with in the playbook. Getting Kevin Connell in there may only get a better arm in there and that is it.
Second, Seymour's play today makes me think that the defense can play at a high level. If Cassell can manage the game with the running game and receiving threats opening up things for the offense, the team may continue to be competitive a la Baltimore Ravens. I'm not throwing away the season if Brady isn't playing another game all season long.
Third, Cassell didn't play bad and if healthy, there is no reason to expect less than Brady on a bum knee and a curious circumstance about his foot (is it hurt or not).
Pity Party Dept.:
I feel bad for Randy Moss and Wes Welker, who I am sure expected to follow up last season with decent numbers. Without Brady, I can imagine they don't feel so hot.
I feel bad for Patriot fans for being back in 2001 mindset. Bledsoe went down and Brady came in early in the season and the defense helped carry the load to the Super Bowl. I was there and I know the back-and-forth on the future of the Pats. It was stupid to speculate they could/couldn't win then and it is stupid to do that now.
Positive Side:
The Pats are dead in the water. Bill has three good running backs to move ball in Maroney, Morris and Jordan. Next week Kevin Faulk will be back. Randy Moss and Welker gives them great receiving threats. We have already seen Cassell connect with Moss for a deep pass and a 10 yrd TD. And the o-line is experienced and well coached.
Defense is looking good, not great. I think the rookies will reflect the future success in 08 and if Mayo/Wheatley/Wilhite/Crable can contribute and learn on the fly, than things will be positive.
