Would Kraft ever let Belichick trade Brady?

In 2015 if Brady was to be hurt and some young 24 year old QB came in and played really well, then it could happen if Brady still wants to play. That would be the way if Brady would be traded, but not in the next few years.

Kraft signed off on Moss after he had a sitdown with the owner. Had he said no Bill would have not proceeded. There are some calls that are ownership calls on any team. Belichick and Kraft have an understanding born of mutual respect. He doesn't make the big ticket signings on controversial trades without the consent of ownership. Kraft doesn't interfere in his day to day operations or play fanboy fantasy advisor because he respects Bill's judgement and opinions. But he does set the annual budget for football operations. And when it comes to franchise level decisions like trading a HOF QB or the $$$ dedicated to his extension or trading away a marquee player like Seymour or acquiring a potential problematic talent, those decisions are made as an organization.

Bill would have stayed behind in 1996 had be been asked to. Kraft thought about it but felt the timing wasn't right and felt he needed to cut ties with the Parcell's regime altogether. He came quick when called in 2000, even going to war with his mentor to get the right to. He did that because he respected this owner and the level to which he and his family wanted to be involved in building a first class organization based on accountability top to bottom. They had a big say in the organizational philosophy. Belichick also had to promise Kraft they would not resort to thugs and hoodlums as a means to an end. And they haven't. They have avoided numerous draft picks including even Ed Reed because of character concerns. The rare exceptions they have made haven't been of the thug variety, more the misunderstood problem child. And they only did that after they had build a character core here that could help manage or mitigate problems. They're having a hard enough time functioning in transition from losing much of that core without losing it's last vestige in Brady. Kraft has been clear his mandate to Bill is to be competitive every season. He's not interested in returning to the boom or bust mentality that caused him to find himself prior to 2001 in possession of a team that never won a damn thing and had nothing more than a looming cap mess to show for it.

good imagination.......meriweather was a character concern........corey dillon was a character concern, antowain smith was a character concern......ted washington was a character concern......bryan cox was a character concern......randy moss

again, BBs contact gives him COMPLETE control over football matters.

as vivid as your thoughts are, the simple fact has been that the pats have always been up against the top of the salary cap, so the amount of expenditure is pretty moot....

Christian Peter was a character concern and he was drafted then not signed. Ed Reed was passed over because of character concerns. There are levels of concern. Some the organization was comfortable with, some they were not. Kraft was consulted when there were. Which is why we haven't really had any thugs and hoodlums here by design, the guys you mentioned were not that either although some came with baggage that was a concern. In those cases Kraft had to be convinced that through vetting BB was satisfied that they would not pose a problem going forward. Moss had to submit not only to a physical but to tearful sitdowns with the HC and the owner before his trade deal was inked.

BB contract gives him control of football operations. As opposed to a GM or his player personnel director having it. Owners always have the final say because they sign your check... Bill has made it a point to work with the Krafts and adhere to certain philosophies where character and finances are concerned to avoid confrontations or butting heads, just as he worked that way with Pioli by choice. One of the reasons Kraft hired him was because he was willing to agree to adhere to certain parameters in conjunction with being given day to day control of football operations. The Krafts do not interject themselves into that dynamic in exchange for being included in the process on a regular basis and consulted prior to making decisions that may have impact beyond the field of play.

They spend to the cap. You apparently don't know what that entails. What they don't do is overspend cash over the cap or exceed pre determined organizational budget limits. Kraft signs off on the big ticket deals like Brady's or Seymour's that commit double digit dollars of his money to players via bonus or guaranteed structure. Bill could probably exceed those limits if he truly wanted to, but he would first have to sell Kraft on his reasoning.

When they targeted Welker it was a simple matter of tendering him a contract with poison pill provision that would make it impossible for Miami to match. Ownership intervened there and decided they were not willing to use that strategy because of the dynamic involved. Instead a trade was brokered at the ownership level.
