But then who is to say that isn't normal since Andre Carter, whom most here believe the team would want back after letting Anderson walk and who is on record as wanting to come back just let slip that he hasn't heard a word from the team since they thanked him for his 2011 contributions...

This is ridiculous. Willie Mac is a 3x Superbowl Champion. Wes Welker is a 2x Superbowl Loser with one of those loses being mainly his fault as he choked away victory in crunch time. Willie can say whatever he wants. He earned that right and I'll take his words over a reciever that owes a big part of his production to Brady and the offensive system.

He didn't win though and he wasn't the MVP because he's a choke artist, glorified fantasy reciever. Seriously, he should be honored he was offered a franchise tag. No other team in this leauge would pay a 31 year old reciever that only excels in the slot that much money. He's mot even the biggest threat in the Patriots receiving game, Gronkowski is. I'd take Mike Wallace over him too, and the Steelers didn't even franchise him.

It's very possible that McGinest is just delivering a message for someone, much like the one Tedy sent Ocho last fall about learning the playbook. It is difficult to believe Willie would go this far out on a limb on his own.

Willie isn't in the loop of message senders. In fact Willie is kind of on the outside looking in as former 3 ring Patriot greats because of the way he left here. The team knew he had an agreement with RAC before RAC even landed the Cleveland gig because Willie - who needed to be needed at that juncture - let that information filter through the locker room. Even Law remains tighter with the present day crew along with Troy and Tedy and Rodney - all of whom will coast into the Pats HOF before Willie or Lawyer or even Vrabel sniff it at the tail end of the log jam. There were some bridges singed if not burned do to ego when some guys left. When his Cleveland gig was up Willie tried to dangle himself returning to end his career here but short of a one day signing which I doubt they'd deny any 3 ringer there was zero interest. And I think that grates on a guy who at one point was being treated (by the media he now chooses and perhaps struggles to work alongside) like some almost mythical driving force behind a dynasty. He's become something of a footnote player even from that era and perhaps resents the accolades being heaped on a guy (who is also part of an offensive unit) he believes can't sniff his XXXL jock.

If Brady and his midget receivers hadn't brought them back in XXXVI and a GD placekicker hadn't nailed it from 48 yards out in a dome Willie might have been the goat of SB XXXVI for his PI that negated a redzone fumble recovered for an apparent game sealing TD...

No I didn't because it was apples and oranges even then, they were offering him a long term deal at top 5 money even with the RFA tender thrown/averaged in and that is something they always do - take advantage of every cap friendly contract construction break at their disposal. Mankins was asking to be the highest paid player at his position in the league and frankly even at 27 he wasn't that. And he was almost incoherently critical and of ownership (as opposed to coach whose decision it actually is but he didn't want to question Bill's unwillingness to make him something he wasn't...) who forgave his nasty transgressions and eventually rewarded him with a deal that surpassed what he was even seeking prior to his holdout. Which I frankly think has left them overpaying for a player who is apparently snakebit in superbowls (where Welker actually performs consistently well with unfortunately few miscues - which is something he's not alone in in Patriots SB history...).

Mankins reported when tagged on the first day he could, which happened to be the first day of training camp as a result of a lockout. Had it been a normal season, Mankins would not have shown up until then anyway. Wes will be here for camp.

3. People on the Welker side of the contract issue should NOT play the "he isn't getting fair treatment from the Pats" card. What they have offered him for the 2012 season is ABUNDANTLY fair. The issue is a difference of opinion on what is fair for 2013, 2014, and 2015.

4. Its likely the Pats have offered him something along the lines of 3 years at around 20-22MM/yr, with $10-11 up front, and most of the rest guaranteed. Welker is probably looking for something in the 30MM range

5. My opinion is Welker should sign his tender get back with the team. The Franchise offer is a fair deal for THIS year. The cold hard reality is he has NO "leverage" whether he's in or out.

6. My opinion if the Pats are offering a 3 year deal in the $20MM range he should sign it. Guys his size, and who have taken the beating he has over the last 5 years tend to lose it fast when it starts to go. That's another cold hard reality. He is NOT going to be the same player at the end of any long term contract that he was when he signs it.

If this way of doing business is rooted in the philosophy that no one player is bigger than the team, management needs to find better less team and player relation destructive ways to express that philosophy. Or this may be an expression of what seemingly is BB's cold dispassionate persona.

Admitedly I root for laundry first, but not exclusively. Welker's contributions have exceeded his paychecks consistently. Barring catastrophic injury he has a couple + good years left. These years coincide with Brady's remaining HOF level years.

Pats management needs to find a way to get it done. Give him 3 years front loaded. The conundrum as those of rational opposing opinion have expressed is doing this in a way that does not set so high a bar that it makes future re-signing of talent like Gronk prohibitively expensive.

Except that not all opinions are created equal, and thus should not be treated as if they were. If you're going to come on a board and make utterly ridiculous assertions like:

1.) Welker was a nobody before Brady
2.) Edelman can put up the same numbers as Welker
3.) Welker is a choke artist

...you should be prepared for the resultant ridicule your comments engender. Now, rest assured I value your concern (trolling) and hope you enjoy your stay on this forum, however brief it may ultimately be.
