6 games in the books and we're down to the elite eight... mostly elite. Here are my thoughts this weekend. Feel free to post your own as they will be scatter shot. Maybe a break down will come later but few games deserve it this week IMO. In case you need a reminder it was IND 24 @ BUF 27, LAR 30 @ SEA 20, TB 31 @ WAS 23, TEN 13 @ BAL 20, CHI 9 @ NO 21 & CLV 48 @ PIT 37.

1) So first off, only 1 real upset this week. Seattle losing to LA was a big shocker for me considering their QB situation. While they were not one of the top contenders going in they had the sense of a true dark horse that might surprise. FYI I don't consider CLV a true upset. Pitt and Ben was suspect as hell going into this game, no matter what the situation in Cleveland was.

2) No single team came out looking particularly amazing. While some looked better than others, no one gave a dominate performance. NO let Chicago stick around all game and it felt like they just had to get out of their way and let them beat themselves. As I said going in, worst team in the playoffs. They proved me right. The Bucs defense and offense both looked out of sorts, the game should have been a blow out, but they let them stick around. Lamar continues to inspire little confidence in his ability to take Baltimore deep. Though Baltimore's D was perhaps the most impressive single unit in these playoffs so far. The Bills were arguably outplayed by a much less talented Indy team. As for the other 2 teams, LAR has a hobbled QB, CLV was given gift after give and almost let a horrible playing Pitt team back into it. Plus their D looks like total trash. None of the potential top contenders gave us anything near a complete game, and none of the 2nd tier teams came close to calming many of the serious doubt about them, either because they are injury related or they were on full display on the field.

3) With the above being true, which team came out looking the best? The Bucs. I tend to always go with the team that has the QB who played the best. Brady balled in that game vs Washington and is looking sharp. It also helps many of their mistakes were unforced and uncharacteristic. 6 drops from the pass catchers, 4 from Godwin who is usually sure handed. A fumble from their 3rd string back who won't play next week, and going 1 for 5 in the red zone when they have one of the best red zone offenses in the game. These are things that should fix themselves. They also get their 2nd best D player back. Though losing a starting G is bad news.

4) The team that came out looking the worst? The Browns. The win was great and the first quarter was sensational. But it was clear from the word go that the first quarter had more to do with Pitt than with them. Pitt made a ton of errors and seems lethargic for much of that quarter. Not only that. Pitt routinely killed their own momentum and played with little urgency until it was too late, hoping the Browns would let them back in it, which they almost did. Against a Ben that for every good pass he threw, he seemed to either miss or toss a turnover worthy ball. As nice as this win in was for them, there were several issues on full display. Not only schematically and mentally, but a lack of 'the moment'. When they play their next opponent who is unlikely to gift them a bunch of early points, untimely penalties and turnovers, they will be in serious trouble.

5) Bad offense is more important than good defense. In these playoffs so far a trend, at least in my mind, is defense matters only when the offense falters. Some of the defenses had good game, particularly the LAR who had the only truly good defensive game of this round IMO. Every other defense which showed up did so only when the offense helped it out. The Bucs with miscues. The Bears with missed passes, dropped TDs and awful QBing. The Titans with being stubborn with a run game that clearly wasn't working while their passing attack was to a degree, even while injured. Indy played pretty good D at times, but they are out now and so not important going forward. Most of the good defensive games this week had more to do with the opposing offense than the defense (besides the Rams maybe, but even then Wilson wasn't great). This is a trend that might go forward, and if it does then that means the games will come down the the offense that game plans well, adapts quickly, and executes the best.

That's all I have for now.

It was the SUPER wildcard weekend and not some ordinary wildcard weekend.

I did not see 1 team that looks invincible. Not 1 team that I would place money on to go all the way.

1. Bills defense is nothing special. Indy and Rivers moved the ball at will on Buffalo. Indy took away Diggs and Buffalos offense sputtered.

2. Tampa had all they could handle vs a practice squad QB. At times Brady looked old and other times looked sharp. I dont see a QB who can take out Rodgers the way GB is playing.

3. Props to the Rams for the win, but Seattle is a mess. Petey has lost the team.

4. The Ravens are done. They did what they needed to do winning a post season game. Henry was not right yesterday. No Corey Davis and Brown was playing hurt. Any opposing offense that can pass to a sizeable lead will take Lamar out of run mode and force him to pass.

5. The Saints game was a struggle fest. Still 7 - 3 midway in the 3rd quarter with Chicago shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly..

6. The Browns won despite all odds. That was Cleveland's super bowl.

Officiating gets an F. Some of the worst of the season.

We are about 4 pieces away from being a top team again.
QB 2 WRs Playmaking tight end edge rusher
Fix those pieces and we are back in contention for the Lombardi

Bob, I tend to agree with most of your points about this weekend. I wasn't particularly impressed with any of the teams. I think the Bills and Bucs defense looked bad. I thought the Saints and Ravens offense looked average, the Rams offense looked bad and the Browns overall were ok, but who trusts that they can go into KC and be competitive, not me.

The units that I was most impressed with were the Rams defense and also the Saints defense. I thought the Ravens defense played pretty well and Tampa's offense was pretty good. Most of the games were competitive which was good , I'd say there were no "great" games though.

Usually, I look at the next round and try and see if there will be one underdog that will win. I'm sure we'll get that this weekend, just not sure which team that will be.

Many thought Brady would have to go through brees and Rodgers, just not in this order.

This pretty much sums it up except I think you are underplaying the Ravens a bit. They started very slow but almost everything afterwards was pretty ruthless and efficient. I wish they'd have to go to Arrowhead next weekend and not the Browns. It would make for a much better game.

The Steelers still got a full week of practice in and had access to all of their starters, that is a gigantic advantage. To me it wasn't so much the Browns winning this game as the Steelers completely melting down in the first quarter and then just being too much behind to make it a game.

If you are down 0:28 after 15min in a playoff game mostly due to self inflicted mistakes odds are you are pretty much screwed no matter what seed you are playing. It also once again highlighted how much has to go your way to win a game when you are down 3-28.

Broadcast grades.

A - Top performance. Nance - Romo had to make a clunker of a game bearable. I admire how Nance lets Romo have the floor and speak. Romo is great sharing his insight about the game. Hopefully they are assigned Tampa vs New Orleans and not the Fox 3 stooges.

A - A for Awful. Buck - Aikman would ruin a soup/sandwich. Aikman drones on about nothing until Shama Lama Ding Dong Buck cuts in to save everyone from the incoherent rambling. Then, Erin Andrews enters fray with breaking news from the sideline. She asked the HC of the losing team what they need to do in the 2nd half. I would be on the edge of seat for the answer if it wasnt obvious back in the 1st quarter. Im glad that I dont like baseball with Shama Lama around.

Ravens have won 6 in a row. Its not pretty but they have something going there. Bills are even hotter though their win wasn’t pretty either, that game will be fantastic.

The Steelers downfall was just breathtaking. Loved ever Minute of it. From 11-0 to losing in rd 1. I would think they made history there lol im hoping they are about to enter some dark times.

I like the rams alot. They definitely have the talent to go a long way. Like many though im not sold on goff being able to win it all. Still suprised they beat Seattle who I thought would represent the nfc.

Bears offense was a no show. Trubisky actually made some nice passes and one should have been a long td. He did well down the stretch, if hed be willing to sign a cam type deal I wouldn’t be opposed, unless we’re within reach of a first round qb. The saints look strong but i dont trust brees ever since the 2018 nfcc.

Excited about Tampa but that defense worries me. What will it take for bowles to get away from that zone. Nonetheless great to look forward to watching tom another week, and both ab and leveon made it further than Pittsburgh.

If Josh Allen didn't have a moment of reversion, the bills/colts game looks different. that lapse of situational awareness gave the NFL an opportunity to possibly get overtime if it came down to tough call...... and the NFL did just that...... Allen needs somebody in his ear to say we're in field goal range, don't be hero.... if he does that in baltimore the bills are done. I've never felt so angry over a football game that my team won then that game.

Looks like it will be in the 20's with wind chill in the teens. No precipitation though.

Aaron is going to need to really overinflate his balls.
Thanks for the info Brandon, if this game was played on a neutral field, I would lean toward the Rams, just because of their defense, but with the frigid weather, I would probably give the edge to Green Bay....I just don't like warm weather or dome teams visiting cold weather stadiums in January.

I think if the Reich doesn't have such an awful game, the Colts win that one. I really felt that they were the better team that day.

A gun to my head, I think the game in Buffalo this week is a close game and could go either way.

I’m actually picking the Rams in this one
