Why Mingo Will Do Well Here

Yes, Mingo is decidedly more like Collins in his makeup. Here's the thing: the game has changed since the year when Mayo was drafted to anchor our LB corp. Collins and Mingo are the future at the position as the NFL becomes more pass oriented, and the power running game becomes increasingly marginalized. The days of the big interior thumper, like Ted Johnson and Brandon Spikes and Jerod Mayo (and Jonathan Freeney) are gone... Freeney is a shadow of the past.

Belichick sees it better than anyone, and has talked about it to the press. He is following and setting the trend to lighter, faster linebackers who can rush the passer, cover a TE or RB in coverage. Modern LBs are not being asked to body up with interior linemen to plug the run, nearly as much, they need to be fast to the edge and explosive in a blitz look.

BB has been recruiting a new brand of players along the defensive front, characterized by Collins, Mingo... even Patrick Chung playing a SS/LB hybrid. It used to be called the Big Nickel defense, but it is becoming increasingly the base defensive front.

So, I do not retract the idea that Mingo is a roster backfill for Mayo. He's a product of an entirely new recruiting profile, and represents a shift in philosophy.
I agree with most of your post.

Collins weighs about 15lbs more than Mingo.

Freeney was just signed to a 2y deal so BB sees the value.

They did use Mingo on the inside but on the blitz.

They have to slide Mingo around b/c he is just not strong enough at the point of attack. He is a deer out there and deer need space

Mingo certainly is no three-down player. But given a specialist role (and embracing it) he could thrive here. I think a passing third-down linebacking group of Mingo and Collins as potential blitzers (with Hightower standing up at the line) could work very well if Mingo can cover a bit. QBs would have no idea who out of the Hightower, Collins, Mingo group is blitzing and who is dropping and all three can rush the passer pretty well when working as blitzers.

His A gap blitz last night was lightning fast and downright scary.

And he was winning off the edge against a tackle, who should have been called for holding on more than one play.

He's going to do just fine here...

It's not going to get called. They never called it on Chandler Jones, and they didn't call it against him in the pre season.

I'm going to sit on the fence for now. Browns fan thinks he can't tackle. He did seem to tackle high allowing the opposition to gain a few yards in the tackle. Is that what Browns fans meant? Will he get pancaked like Ayers used to get pancaked rushing off the edge? Will he get boxed out taking on blockers in the run?

He has speed, and is a hard worker according to BB. Should keep him on the team, to see what he can do. I don't want to see him on the field on probable run plays.

I know it was one game, but mingos talent is obvious. Imagine sheard and long at end with collins and mingo at outside lb thats a lot of pass rush.

High is an underrated pass rusher.
I agree and while were at it IF Anthony Johnson is what he seems to be and if he makes the team that would make for a fearsome pass rush all around.

Why? Just look at that name...we had the Bruuuuuuschi line in the stadium...now it will be miiiiingoooooo

My biggest question is can the guy cover? If not, he may put up some Mark Anderson like numbers as a clean up guy but won't be a high impact player. If he can cover, he'll be a huge wrinkle in this defense.

I think they will not be (allowed) on the field at the same time ...

Yea some team will say that it is unfair to have 6 defensive players in the box with a 3 cone under 7.2 seconds.

Isn't that because he can't shed OLs, can't sniff out plays, and gets run over at the point of attack?

I think he'll do well with the coaching we have. The preseason game was promising and BB and Patricia will put him in the right situations. Won't be surprised if he is outperforming Freeney...at all.

maybe he can be the next chris slade / willie mcginest. maybe our version of von miller without the failed drug tests.

Maybe but I think the players you mention are a lot stronger at the point of attack but not as fast/quick as Mingo.

If anyone is as old as I am the player he reminds me of is fmr Giants OLB Carl Banks.
