Why is Mankins still Here?

i have a gut feeling that the money freed up from this trade could go to Mankins. That would make me feel a little better about all this.

Guards are interchangeable. Mankins is one of the best in the league, but having him come back wouldn't represent such a boost to the offense that would make me feel better about losing Moss.

Because he has to sign his tender before he can be traded (as was the case with Welker a few years ago, and Jarrad Page this year), and he won't sign it if they're just going to trade him somewhere he doesn't want to go.

And the trade deadline is the end of Week 6.

First, who said that Belichick thinks this season is lost? They are 3-1 and tied for first place in the division. I think Belichick still thinks this team today can win the division and compete for the Super Bowl.

Second, the Pats need a trade partner for Mankins. I'm sure they could unload him for a fourth or fifth rounder if they wanted to, but unlike Moss, they could get more in compensatory picks than that. Obviously, no one is willing to give up value for Mankins. That is why he is here. I am sure the Pats would have no problem trading him if someone would give value for him.

Once more...how many teams facing CBA uncertainties and a possible 2011 lockout are going to trade a decent draft pick for a guard and then pay him $8M a year?

Any Mankins trade can/would only be accomplished after the Pats would allow his agent to speak to the potential trading partner about a contract extension. Other than that, why would Mankins sign his tender (so that he could be traded) nobody does anything in this world for nothing, and Mankins surely would not let the Pats trade him, without getting the contract he wants out of it. So the Pats are handcuffed by that, they hate to let other organizations talk to their players (Branch). Let's face it, any trade for Mankins would have to start with a second round pick, because you are going to get a thrid round comp pick for him, when he leaves via free agency anyways. So the Pats would at the very least be asking for a 2nd. Now trading him straight up for a player may be interesting... but either way trading Mankins is very difficult because Mankins has basically veto power over any trade and will demand a contract extension prior to any deal being consumated.

I'm going to disagree. Mankins has zero incentive to play those last six games.

Many in the media are under the mistaken assumption that he needs to play this year in order to gain an accrued season of service time, in order to become a free agent. That is not true at all.

Mankins already has five seasons. If 2011 is another uncapped year, the length of time needed to become an unrestricted free agent is five years (as opposed to six in 2010, and four in the years prior to that.) On the other hand if a new CBA is agreed upon, I cannot envision the NFLPA agreeing to lengthen the time to becoming an unrestricted free agent from four years (which it was in the last CBA), to six years.

In addition if Mankins signs his tender and finishes the season with the Pats, then the team would have the option of franchising him. He's not looking for a one-year deal; he wants a longterm contract with a good amount of guaranteed money. Playing those last six games could potentially hurt his value as a free agent next March, but there is little or no chance it would increase his value.

The only way Mankins plays this year in my opinion is if he agrees to a longterm contract first, whether it be with the Pats or another team. I think the most likely scenario is that he sits the entire season.

They can still trade his rights.Yes, the trading Team would want to make a deal with his agent, but technically they can still trade his rights. When the deal is done in principal, he signs his tender and signs elsewhere. I can see him for a third rounder, Moss for the same is just dumb.
