Why did Lombardi leave Patriots?

Even though this is true, I think the real issue for him is that book he has in mind. Think about it. He worked for Al Davis, Walsh, and BB. I mean how great is THAT. And what a fantastic book that would be. He really should write it. He needs to, and I will be among the first to read it.

In fact it shouldn't be just a book, it should be a 24 volume set. Think of the history those 3 guys are responsible for.
From the mid 60s to mid 80s Al Davis was a mastermind. Too bad the perception of todays younger fans is that he was a old man who lost his sensibilities and the game passed him by

But...he turned into an old man who lost his sensibilities and the game passed him by...

Have any of the guys who have found success on television ever gone back? From Madden to Jimmy Johnson to Cower, Gruden, etc. etc., if they get a good gig on TV, they never go back… And why would they? They're getting paid a lot, there's no responsibility really, and they still get to be around the game.
Bill Parcells - Wikipedia says Parcells did media in his years between NYG and NEP, and again between NYJ and DAL, and again between DAL and MIA. I personally didn't find him to be too entertaining, but in any case he was a big name and the media was very willing to hire him. The article says he was offered the Monday Night Football gig which is a very high prestige gig IMHO, but he refused it.

I also think that in years gone by a media gig was less prestigious than a head coach or GM gig, but these days media is king and no one looks down at Gruden et al for cashing in. Personally I think it is getting a bit tiring to see all the Gruden speculation every season or two. He's making the big bucks and holding down a prestigious job, and I can't see why he'd want to do what his brother does for a living when he can just do the MNF gig.

On Parcells, wonder if it would've been different if he had actually taken the MNF job or something similar. It seems like when they get settled into something high-profile is when their coaching days seem over.

The speculation about the current guys definitely gets tiring. The truth is, headcoaching jobs are tremendously taxing, so unless they still have the fire burning there's no way they're going back.

**** Vermeil and he won a Super Bowl.

Not really a fan of lombardi like most here. Mostly keeps name dropping BB all the time even before he joined the pats and was with NFLN. He traded moss to us for a 4th which iam happy about ,other than that he hasnt done much as a GM here other to keep mentioning he was with BB in cleveland.

Belichick calls a guy one of the smartest people he knows, that's going to get the attention of most people around here.
