Who has been returning punts in OTA's?

This is relevant because of the logjam at WR and the injury history of Edelman.

Edelman has three roles: punt returner, backup slot receiver, emergency backup split receiver. If his role can be met elsewhere on the active roster, then we might finally say goodbye to this injury waiting to happen.

I think I read Amendola, Washington, maybe Hawkins.

:snob:

A utility player who is regularly out half the year might be considered to be worth a roster spot by some, by others not so much. I tend to agree that if Edelman is healthy, he will make the team. However, we MUST have options, since it seems unlikely that Edelman would be available for an entire season.

I agree that no one player can replace a utility player. It does not follow that the utility player is worth a roster spot.

I know, right?

This guy's been an elite ST player and has so many useful roles it's doubtful any one player could replace him.

Personally I think it's important the team retain at least one WR who has experience catching passes from Tom Brady. Also considering Brady's comments that it takes about 2-3 seasons to fully understand the offense, it would also make sense to have a vet who knows the offense in and out. As for options? We do have options.

They just aren't as good.

It has been Washington and Amendola who have been returning punts so far.

I agree that as controversial as some make it out to be, the thought of Edelman not making the team is a fair thought to have. In my opinion, I did not feel that he was that close to being on the bubble last year...however this year I do think he's closer to being on the bubble.

I'd personally still have him around a 65-70% chance of being here, but the overhaul at WR + maybe even addition of Washington probably do not do anything to "help" his case either. While showing flashes of talent at times, particularly in the ST/punt return game, he has also primarily failed as an actual WR, and that's what makes this a debate (along with his health concerns).

Except that historically, Washington's been significantly better at KR than PR, and no one's been as good at PR as Edelman except Patrick Peterson and Leodis McKelvin.

Sure, and that's probably his best attribute and the greatest reason towards keeping him.

I'm just pointing out that there probably is some validity towards wondering how much of a lock he is, in a pure WR sense.

Like I've said before, I'd much rather see him stay, and I'd personally put something around a 65-70 percent chance that he does stay; but the argument does lie in the fact that the whole WR corps has been overturned, and there are certain questionable features about him and his actual receiving production to this point.

i hope washington is the guy

Why would you remove him from what he does best and relegate him to doing this he is mediocre at?

?? I don't understand your point. If Edelman is healthy, and Belichick is willing to spend as position on a part-time punt returner, then he'll keep Edelman. He SHOULD be good enough to be the emergency #4 receiver on Game Day (since we only use 3).

Unless Edelman has improved, if he makes the 53, I don't expect him to do anything except return punts and back up in case of Game Day injuries.

I misunderstood your post. I thought you were suggesting take away PR duties to save him for WR.
I reread that and clearly I misread.

Interesting choice of guys to test out:
It is only OTAs; and I thought a couple of the rookie wrs had done PR duties before.
So is that BB holding to his 'I want vets w/ good hands holding the ball at critical juncture (hi turnover opportunity) points in the game
---
Or does he just want the rookies to focus on learning ONE THING and he may try them later too?

Washington was known as a KR and has doen some limited PR duties in past (I think) but not as successfully as KR. But he seems close to a roster lock at this point - esp if BB finding other roles for him.
I guess BB does not share the injury concerns w/ Amendola if he is going to put him out there for PR. AND is that then a POSITION-ASSIGNMENT; THAT the slot WR is a defacto PR GUY (or just happens that DA happens to be able to do the same things as WW)?
