If backups should play special teams unless they are primary players in sub packages (Vellano and Buchanan). If not, they should be inactive.

FOUR UNITS
It seems that Belichick has his 3 LB/STers in Fletcher, Collins and White. Wilson, as expected, played in all four.

MISSING IN ACTION
Who is missing? What active defenders didn't play on at least 2 of these special teams units. One name comes to mind: Bequette.

Four units
LB Jamie Collins
LB Dane Fletcher
WR Matthew Slater
LB Chris White
S Tavon Wilson

Two units
CB Kyle Arrington
DE Michael Buchanan
CB Marquice Cole
FB James Develin
WR Julian Edelman
CB Logan Ryan
RB Shane Vereen

Special teams usage, per Reiss

What jumped out at me:

  • 3 ST LBs used on all "big 4" ST units each.
  • Arrington, Edelman and Vereen as the only starters or near-starters to be on as many as 2 units.
  • Buchanan and Develin as the only two other rotation players to be on 2 units.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when the Ebner returns.

I noticed that, too. The STs are their own side of the ball, as much as offense or defense. Aside from these 12 guys and the specialists, there are 6 players who showed-up on one team only. It's a good way to manage player health, as well as maximize practice time for STers. Throw in some practice players, and everybody gets time working on their most important job.

Beauharnais is on the special special team with Bequette.
