If we know who Belichick trusts to be our returners and backup returners, we might be better able to consider roster options.

I don't think that we should count on Faulk and Vareen as returners at this point. Using our aging #1 receiver as our primary punt returner seems somehow wrong.

Allocating two inexpensive roster spots to the receiver positions may be the answer.

Punt returner: Edelman w/ Welker as a back-up. Kick-off returner: Price w/ Edelman as a back-up. Tate: hasta la vista...Just my opinion.

I'm not sold on Price as a returner, although you save a rooster spot. That is probably his biggest upside in the return game in my opinion. Although he can improve of course, so when he takes a couple returns to the house I'll have to eat my own words.

The biggest question is if Bill thinks it's worth it to keep a Tate/whoever as a designated kick-returner with limited use in other areas of the game on the roster with the current kick-off rules.

Edelman Tate price butler slater Welker....

Here's an idea: how about giving Butler a shot. Thought he was supposed to have some ability doing that when we drafted him, he's got speed and might be good to have an extra DB available on game day. Not sure how durable he would be though.

Butler has been getting a lot of reps as KR.
Edelman seems to have locked up PR role. All reports are he has looked improved this year.

I agree that Vareen was probably in the thoughts. But he has 45 minutes of practice experience.

All of us who posted last year who are again posting this year in the forum.

returners, we don't need no stinking returners

It is the goal of our defense to ensure that we have lots of punt return reps, but few kickoff return ones.

That joke aside, BB probably doesn't mind if the opponent scores a few times per game, as long as the scores are all FGs. Better 4 kickoffs after FGs than 2 after TDs.

Anyhow, the number of punt returns that aren't fair catches isn't all that high. So I think BB's OK with having one base punt returner who can stand some big hits, with a second guy behind him who BB trusts fully for inside-the-20 punts.
