Which event would be more significant?

Most historically significant event? As an amateur historian, I'd have to say the Fall of the Western Roman Empire is the most important in shaping our modern world. As it ushered in the Middle ages, a period of intense competition between petty kingdoms. These small nations, as a result of the constant competition, bred innovation on an unprecedented scale (in a period called the Renaissance, a time when the classic knowledge of the Greeks and Romans were being reexamined). Thus, Europe soon had the edge over the rest of the world, with their superior military technology, they conquered and colonized the Americas.

Again, Greco-Roman ideals were being looked at during the Enlightenment era. A small handful of British colonies located on the Atlantic seaboard of North America took them into account, and drafted a Constitution for a new form of Government.

There you are, a very brief and somewhat poorly done analysis of why things are the way they are.
