According to the NYT, it was 2003.

However according to his wedding announcement, he left in Jan 2002.
"In January 2002, he left the Patriots, and a year later took a job with NFL-Europe, working with the Cologne Centurions. "NFL-Europe is the equivalent of major league baseball farm teams," explains Matt."

I smell something fishy....
