What's with all the fines on the Patriots defense?

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

Complete BS. This was probably Mayo's best game ever in the NFL, and it was very clean, VERY hard hits that literally seperated the ball from the reciever. He was textbook perfect, the NFL could have used this game film to educate other players on how to hit, but they fine him? Whats their excuse, he violated the copyright by using the identical tackles they taught players?

Total freakin BS.

Just get it over with:

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

This is getting ridiculous.

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

God-dell strikes again..

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

Unsympathetic as I may be toward Patriots players and their fines, for the life of me I don't get where the NFL is going with its disciplinary policy.

Would it be cynical to think that its part of a larger picture and the new CBA? The players want more transparency in the disciplinary process and more consistency and the owners will give it in exchange for...............

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

I knew they would fine him..just didn't know how much

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

The league really needs to tighten up these rulings, both the lack of consistency in the calls/interpretation, and the dollar amount of the penalties.

This new trick of making rulings on games three days later regardless of the on-field call has increased the chaos/tension. Publicly there is far too much resultant emphasis and discussion on officiating and league rulings.
So it feels like chaos, feels random, like mid-course corrections.
Make the changes in the off-season, please?

Two specific things that bug/confuse me:
1) allowing defenders to shove receivers out of bounds. Why this change?
2) hyper scrutiny over catches, where part of the ball contacts the ground.

Defenders flying into receivers at the sidelines to prevent a catch is a dangerous situation, totally contrary to the safety trend.

On catches, I now have no idea what they are going to rule.
If part of the ball touches the ground, is it a catch?
The rulings are inconsistent.

rant out.
Happy new year to all!

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

Somehow my brain filters out the space between bills and hit when I see this thread title. Kinda funny.

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

It was the fourth and twelve hit if memory serves me right. I watched it in 1/4 slow motion and it was a helmet-to-helmet hit. Completely unintentional, and I believe this fine is BS, but it's now starting to clearly seem like any time two helmets make contact, you're getting fined, no matter the circumstances. I don't agree with the leagues implementation of this particular rule, or a number of their other recent rule changes, but at least a pattern is developing, and we all just need to get used to it, or move on.

One thing I will say, the announces for that game almost seemed to be looking for helmet-to-helmet contact whenever the Patriots were on defense, as if they now have that reputation.

Then watch other teams play, its nearly the same. Sometimes fans spend too much time thinking everyone is out to get their team.

My previous post shows otherwise. That's why I don't understand this fine at all.

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

Wow. I can't figure out if Mayo's fine or Pryor's fine for his Farve hit earlier in the season is a bigger joke.

You do realize the guy currently running the show is a life long jets fan with family members who are season ticket holders, and a number of the Patriots biggest rivals are on the competition committee? I'm just saying sometimes a little conspiracy theory is warranted. Honestly though, I agree that a lot of fans go overboard with this kind of stuff.

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

Goodell:Time to pay up Jerod.

Mayo:For which play

Goodell:uhh any...all of them. Stop hitting so hard.

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

Given that Pats players are frequently fined I would NOT be surprised to see that in 2012 or so the Polian/Goodell competition committee decide on game suspensions for the more frequent offenders (i.e. Patriot players) over the past few years. Seriously.

How Samuel is NOT fined is a mystery until you realize that he plays with Vick and is not, I repeat NOT now a Patriot.

Re: Mayo fined 10k for Bills hit

Looks like Massachusetts isn't the only one who has invented creative ways of taxing people.

NFL says no penalty should have been called on Samuel:
League hopes to change rules to make Samuel’s hit on Rice illegal

League hopes to change rules to make Samuel’s hit on Rice illegal | ProFootballTalk

“Because the receiver had completed the catch with two feet down and possession of the ball, he had protection from a hit to the head only from a defender who launches,” Liu said. “Samuel did not ‘launch’ as defined by our current rules because the ball of his right foot was on the ground when contact with the receiver was made. Rule 12, Section 2, Article 8(h) Note states: ‘Launching is defined as springing forward and upward by a player who leaves his feet to make contact on the receiver.’ [NFL executive V.P. of football operations] Ray Anderson confirmed that the NFL Competition Committee will review the rule and the definition of ‘launch’ in the off-season with the anticipation that this type of action will be a foul in future seasons.”

My favorite comment regarding officials came from Shaq:
Shaquille O'Neal took aim at the officials, and for his comments the league docked him $35,000.
His initial reaction? "Whoopdie-freaking-do," he said.
Then, he thought it over.
"In 20 years of playing in the NBA," he said,
"I've paid over $90 million in federal tax,
$40 million in FICA tax,
and $1 million in David Stern tax."

Another fine on a member of the Patriots defense:

It Is What It Is - Vince Wilfork fined $10K by league for hit on Chad Henne

Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork was fined $10,000 by the NFL for driving the quarterback into the ground on a play in last Sunday’s Patriots-Dolphins game. Wilfork’s hit on Miami quarterback Chad Henne came in the third quarter of the regular-season finale at Gillette Stadium. Wilfork sacked Henne, but the play was ruled a helmet-to-helmet hit and the New England defender was penalized 15 yards.

Cue somebody to say 'it's the curse of being on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated'.
