What if we *Don't* hire a GM?

someone else who is fine with Miles Bryant (or is it Marcus Jones) as a starter
=========
I suppose that I would be OK starting with what we have, but I would prefer an upgrade owe Bryant at starting CB. Was he really so great this year that we now think him a starter? Has Marcus Jones gotten so much better while injured to consider him a starter?

Yes Marcus Jones was a starter before the shoulder injury. He will be a starter in 2024. It is Myles Bryant.

Considering that Mayo has no head coaching experience and very little as the (defacto) DC, this is not the time to be skimping on the role of GM/Director of Player Personnel. Up until now they had their opinions, but BB had the final say in everything. Mayo is going to have his hands full learning and adjusting to his new role as HC. I would prefer that he focus on that, and lean very heavily on others to handle the personnel evaluations and decisions.

Whether it is Groh/Wolf or one of those mentioned in the GM? thread (such as Alec Halaby, Joe Horitz, Adam Peters), I just think it is too much too soon to for Mayo to have the last word on draft and free agency decisions. The Patriots need competent, experienced decision making in this role. A different perspective (ie, an outsider) would be very helpful, in my opinion.
Unfortunately, is doesn't appear that we'll get that this off-season.

people continually underestimate the analytics team the Patriots had in place for most of BBs tenure... The department was lead by Ernie Adams, and was highly effective... I believe that his retirement hurt this franchise. But there is an analytics department here.

I think this franchise has talent. But most of that talent should be relegated to the "depth" portion of the roster. What we need are 5 good starters. Not too far off the mark, but not there yet. Hope to add to the talent we do have this off season.
More than 5 good starters. And, more and better depth.

Looks like Washington is hiring Ben Johnson as HC.
I gotta say like that Was is doing with Johnson and Peters.
They are def targeting Caleb.
Gotta move to 1 if we want him.
I would take Maye or Daniels over Williams. Sounds like too much of a Lorenzo Ball situation with him.

Pittsburgh win too.

Lose one of those games and they can sit there and draft Maye at 2.

The kicker was useless all year long. And the one time you needed him to be useless, he boots a near 60 yarder.
Nice too know that I'm not the only one that feels this way.

Why are we worried about extending KB? He's not really a major concern here.

What difference makers are we talking about here? What FA tackles would you want in here?
I'd let KB walk. It takes at least a year to come back from an ACL tear. I do like him, but we can do, and need better and younger players at WR.

Yeah.. I believe that's the direction we should be going.
Unless they can get Fields for a 3rd this year and a 4th next year.
I believe this is the direction we should go. I've seen alot of support on the idea for Fields.. I like him, he's talented. So what if we traded for him, took Harrison jr at #3 ? Still took a QB in the 2nd... and LT at # 33 ?

KB is only 28.. he and pop were the only play makers at WR this season. I believe the team should at least give him a 1 yr deal. Just my opinion

Depth, the #4 CB, plays a lot. I'd all that position backup, and the others depth.
=======
In any case, Macus Jones has shown nothing to make me believe that he should be our starter at nickel back. Both Bryant and Wade are ahead of him at nickel. For me, Marcus is our #5 CB, which is a fine position, given that he is one of the best punt returners in the NFL.

STARTERS (need 3): Gonzo, Jonathan, ???
COMPETING FOR #4 CB and #6 CB: Bryant, Wade, Austin, Bolden, Wilson
PUNT RETURNER and #5 CB

Perhaps the staff has judged a couple of the backups as being a starter. Personally, I'd be more comfortable with signing a free agent CB (and free safety).
I like this. I've pitched the idea of adding another stud to pair with gonzo. Can never have to many DBs. Mayo will likely go 6,7 DBs in some formations especially against high octane offensive teams.

All things being equal, a 1 year deal would not be the worst thing. And, if we greatly increase our WR talent (and Pops becomes a stud in the slot), KB could be a great #3 or 4.

I really like that scenario!

Absolutely correct! 100% agree. @ pape made a great point that we have great supporting cast WRs. Parker and juju, KB are great complimentary players. Imagine if juju, Parker, KB all had a chance to play with brady! Pop is going to be a phenomenal slot WR going forward. He had a nice rookie season.

@Pape On BB.. looks like Dallas is a real destination for him. That's a team that's literally a coach away. Another early playoff exit.
in theory, yes... Im not convinced dallas will move on from mccarthy... jerry jones hates to admit he made a mistake,,, he kept garrett there for what, 9 years?

Agreed.. I can see him moving McCarthy to a front office position of some sorts.. but this team is ready made to compete Bill the coach would have this team in the NFC championship game. Yes Garrett was there a long while. However will Bill on the market will this sway Jerry's thinking?
