It's not just Welker. No team has announced a signing of a big ticket player, that I recall.

Everybody has a short off-season and is enjoying a couple of weeks of downtime. My guess is that they sign Welker to a three-year deal during the week of the combine when the coaching staff and the cap geniuses are in one place and can pull the trigger. If they are too far apart, he's gone for future picks.

This thread has more longevity than a nature vs. nurture argument over on the psychology board.

A. Welker's success is more the result of the offensive system, and therefore another good slot/short route receiver would have similar success (although perhaps not as much).

B. Welker's success is more the result of him being uniquely good at this role and therefore isn't replaceable and will leave a gaping hole if he plays elsewhere.

Everyone wants him back, but the $$ is determined by where you fall on this argument.

And in response to the OP's original question, here are some others:

1. What's holding up the Pat's signing of their 2012 draft picks?
2. When will the Pat's receivers respond to Giselle's criticism?
3. What's holding up the Jet's Super Bowl parade?

If the rumors of Welker asking for Larry Fitzgerald money is true, then his side is likely to be more responsible for holding up the deal. But I doubt the Pats are offering fair market value at this point either if Welker is way off on his demands.

It still hasn't happened, and it's looking ever more likely that Welker will be Franchised.
Hear that silence, thats a deal being worked on. One day soon you'll wake up to the news that Welker has been signed. Thats the way it usually works.

Wait, what? Larry Fitzgerald money. Do you have a link for those rumors or a source?

No effing way. Welker's camp has to be much more grounded than that.

rumors of Welker asking for Larry Fitzgerald money

Some elements of the Boston mediotverse have hinted at such a stance on Welker's part, but I've not seen such a claim supported with any substantial evidence.

It usually boils down to money. What do the Pats perceive Welker is worth and what does he think he deserves to get paid? Plus of course there is an agent trying to maximize the money on Welker's last big contract. Will he take something like 3/27 or does he want a long term deal (5 years+) with more guaranteed money? Etc.

Like that dumb NESN article saying the Pats should move on from Welker based solely on the author's hunch that he wanted more than $10M/year?

Welker signing will cost $$$. BUT how would Brady feel about losing his most reliable weapon of the past 5 years?

The draft hasn't been held yet. Much as it has been hyped up. The combine hype is going to be crazy. Especially when you consider that freaks lik Jason-Pierre-Paul was drafted with just the 15th overall pick. The pressure for BB to move up for a quality defender has to be higher than ever.

2. When will the Pat's receivers respond to Giselle's criticism?

When did Giselle's opinion on football matter?

3. What's holding up the Jet's Super Bowl parade?

Hard to get to the Superbowl when you can't even get into the playoffs. Rexy is going to be on the hotseat and is looking at unemployment in the next 12 months if he doesn't do something drastic to convince ownership he can turn the Jets sinking ship rightside up.

IMO, this deal isn't done because there is no rush. Wes isn't leaving. They'll franchise him and work out a long term deal a la Big Vince.

I still can't forgive him for the Superbowl, I hope he never plays a down in a Patriots jersey again. Top 5 WR my ass. Only in fantasy football maybe.

You ever made a mistake in your life? Do you think Welker either wants or needs your forgiveness? You sound like a 3 year old girl who lost her Barbie.

When was it supposed to be done?

Patriots WILL tag Welker, and they will iron out a contract.

IMO - Welker is 7-8/yr max (3yrs) of which 15m is guaranteed...

Any more than that, it's gonna be tough..

They should give him no more than 5 yrs, 15 million guaranteed.

I don't think Welker is gonna be as good as he is if he played elsewhere. But I think he's worth the money and he's certainly earned the money in NE. He fits the system perfectly and Brady probably depends on him more than any other receiver on the roster. However, if the Pats get Lloyd for a lower deal and they manage to get Bowe from KC or even Marques Colston, then they should part ways with Welker

What are you basing your numbers on?

What I think he is worth.

I think he's worth 5yrs for 30 mill/ 15mill guaranteed.

So you're just making the numbers up out of thin air? Why would you think he's only worth $6 million a year, and why would he sign such a long contract for for such a small amount of money when he can get more than what you're willing to guarantee just by going with 2 years of the franchise tag?
