Waiting to go out to San Diego not until Friday....I was hoping they would get there a bit earlier and practice some fundamentals more there then only having a day or less to practice out west..Your Thoughts?

Where are they really going to practice?

It is more for the coaches than it was for the players. The coaches have so much information right in their offices that it makes it easier to make a game plan out of. Its not like they can go to San Diego march to Marty's office and say "hey you have that game film of week 3 on you guys?"

Practicing at home makes it much easier.

They're already going out early. They would normally fly out Saturday. I'm good with Friday, any earlier is overkill.

I agree..Thurs too early...from what I heard they are practicing and then..flying out later in the day..sounds GOOD!!!

I remember seeing video of them practicing in the hotel lobby when they went to Pitt in '04, so I'm not sure going on Thursday would help anything. They need a few good days of practice before this game, and not in hotel lobbies. lol

Great article in Wed. Boston Globe on Pats / Chargers AFC title game in early 60's. SD Coach Sid Gilman had civilians dressed up in Navy uniforms spying (and get the full Patriot game plan) on the Patriot's during their practices at a US Navy facility field in San Diego.

Great article. And its time for payback.

Turn about is fair play. BB and the Navy go way back (his Dad was Navy's football coach). Let BB call his Navy contacts and use all the Navy's latest surveilance techniques to spy on Marty and his team.

The Navy is full of patriots . . . let them show their patriotic spirit! :eat3:

Haven't we already talked about this?

It's already known the Pats will be flying out tomorrow (Friday). Teams usually fly out on Saturdays.

I think the question was less about what we know versus what we think..

I think it depends on the locale. Acclimation is a two-way street. Elevation and climate affect games. At the same time, do not under-estimate the effects of down-time on players. A few hours of leisure per day in a place like SD may, MAY, have detrimental effects on the effectiveness of some players.
Personally, I think a team should acclimate as soon as possible. A billion dollar organization has the resources to isolate 75-125 people (coaches, players, etc). People as a rule are affected by geographically measurable changes, in all regards, particularly finely tuned machines used to regiment. Anybody who is a car nut will know their sports car bought at low humidity high altitude conditions performs differently in other conditions. Add the human condition and it multiplies. The gamble lies in whether or not it matters.

Get the boys used to the environment. Turn it into mere background rather than a distractionable factor.

I think your coach wants them focused so that when the plane lands all the players think about would be: hotel, practice facility, back to hotel....the Q and then game time.

Over here, the Chargers are busy with fan appearances and such but I don't think all these distractions will affect their gametime performance.

Last year, the Bolts had the worst schedule of all the teams. Their combined travel miles was around 33,000.

Go on: as much vitriol and conjecture has been parlayed 'round here, I am curious.

What is going on around SD? Are the players themselves seemingly caught up in the local media blitz? To the point of inflated exhuberance? etc? I'm just curious if they may be getting caught up in the hype and ripe for a fall?

I see your point. Blame the media and fans like us for all these rancid comments and innuendos.

These players are professionals. The Chargers have had their share of distractions: Foley getting shot prior to start of season, Kiel's cough syrup debacle, Merriman's steroid scandal, and a few unknown players on domestic violence charges, etc., but the team has persevered. Key players who got injured were replaced by backups who stepped up to the plate and gave out their best, hence the 14-2 record. I've listened to almost all the players interviews and every one of them acknowledges the intensity of this Sunday's matchup. No Charger player is looking past the Pats.

I'm sure New England has its share of distractions as well.

According to Travelocity it's a 6 hour and 20 min flight. So it's safe to say, they should be over the jetlag by Sunday. Having to wait until 4:00 on gameday is going to be harder for the team than dealing with the flight.
