What Are You Drinking Saturday?

I am more on a modest income so I will have to settle for the Crown Royal...as apposed to the 12 year old stuff, but I will prolly be enjoying that...looking forward to Saturday, seems like a while since the boys played...
Hey, Chivas is as cheap or cheaper than Crown Royal, and while it's not great, it's still a Scotch. I like other whiskeys (and whiskies), but something about the smokyness of (most) Scotches does it for me more.

I'm probably going to finish a bottle of Dalmore 12 tonight and would like to move up a shelf for the game. Being primarily a bourbon drinker, I could use some advise regerding a purchase. My preference is for complex whiskies. Here are my choices for purchase.

Bowmore Islay 18
Dalwhinnie 15
Glenmorangie 18
Glenlivet 18

TIA

"I like my scotch like I like my women... Old enough to vote"

Of the group, Bowmore is good stuff, a bit peaty for what I'm used to, but I've only had the 12 year, not the 18 year. Glenlivet is also a good choice. Again, I've only had some of the younger stuff, but was still a good scotch.

I've never had either of the Dalwhinnie or Glenmorangie, so I have no opinion on those two.

I'm not far from Plaistow. I'll come over and help you decide.

Thanks. I'll go with the Bowmore then as I'm favorably acquainted with the charred oak taste of bourbon and prefer something with a voice.

Islay whiskies generally have the strongest smoky character and are my favorites.

If you want smokey, Auchentoshan and Glenfiddich are right up your alley. I am totally in love with those two brands. Peaty is a bit much for my tongue given I love smoky single malts, but peaty is not "bad" IMO either.

I've had quite a bit of Glenfiddich, but I will give Auchentoshan a try. In fact, if they have it at my local liquor store (which has a pretty good selection of single malts), I'll get it for the game tomorrow. What's a bottle of 12-15 year stuff go for?

You'll be suprised, but Auchentoshan is generally pretty inexpensive. I will actually drink the 10yr bottle of Auchentoshan. Thats how much I like them lol. It's really good for being a 10 year. My buddy has a bottle of 21 year I'm hoping to get a sample of tonight.

The 10yr is usually like 40/bottle. They don't have it listed @ 12-15 year on bevmo's website (where I get my scotch, but directly from the store, not over the web). I'd recommend that, or of course the 21 and I haven't even tried it... lol. The 21 is only 140/bottle which is a good price IMO. It's what I paid for my Balvenie port wood 21 y/o.

The Auchentoshan Three wood is a bit more @ 54.99 a bottle, but is DAMN GOOD too.

They have the AU select and the GL 12yr. Maybe I'll try one along with the Bowmore.

Please stop! I'm developing a serious jones for scotch!

Damnit, now I want scotch... Sometimes working 3 12's sucks lol. I still have 45min before I can go home and have a nice glass and a relaxing cigar.

The Dalmore 12 I'm drinking is a Highland Malt. It's a little heavy on the sherry and has some type of unrefined notes on the sides of my tounge at mid-taste. After a draw on a pipe filled with Borkum Riff Whiskey flavor it does have a nice smoked peat finish.

Ooh, a pipe smoker. I haven't lit mine off in quite awhile since finding a inexpensive way to smoke cigars. Smoking a pipe always reminds me of my grandfather. There is just something about the smell of pipe tobacco that takes me back to when I was younger (only 27, but you get the picture lol)

I want to understand what you just said...but I am coming up empty...

Hes talking about the flavor of the scotch mixing with the flavor of the pipe tobacco. Peaty is used to describe how the overall taste of the combination comes together.

First he described the scotch being a bit heavy on the sherry side (another taste description) with some unidentifiable flavors that linger.

Then when drawing on his pipe, the flavor of the tobacco mixing with the lingering flavor of the scotch combines for an over all peaty flavor.

Or at least, thats how I read it lol

i just start laughing and drink faster when my buddies start in with the nosing. i can talk scotch with the best of em, but it just sounds to pompous to me.
