Goodell wants the past tapes, but why? To levy more penalties and screw the Pats, for sure. But to stop the Pats from using them in the future, for competitive advantage?

There's no point! The cat's out of the bag, and every team that the Pats face from here on out will have overhauled all their signals. So the Pats can't use the past tapes for future competitive advantage. It's code-breaking 101...once your code is broken, you create a new one.

So that leaves witch hunt / more fines as the only motive Goodell can logically have. Which means Kraft & BB already know this and will NEVER give Goodell anything that can possibly incriminate the organization any further. They'll give him a few tapes to whet his voracious, spiteful appetite and that'll be that.

I don't think the tapes will result in further penalties, I think Badell wants the tapes, and copies, so that we can't benefit from the illegal gains.

Anyone who has seen the videotape footage, who isn't a weasel, cannot say with a straight face that this gave the Pats any competitive advantage during games, was cheating, or was stealing. It was simply a rule violation.

Or perhaps this way, it will cut down on "some" (not all) of the future speculation. The future teams that we beat cant say "well they still have the notes... "

Belichick should release a statement to Commissioner Goodell quoting Colonel Nathan Jessep from the movie "A Few Good Men":

"I'm gonna tear your eyes right outta your head and p i s s in your dead skull [and I'm gonna videotape the whole thing]. You f u c k e d with the wrong [Patriot]!"

I totally agree, but these things are way out of control. There are people in this league who are out to get us, besides Mangina. I am fearful that before this gets under control, there could be further action. I think it's time to lawyer up and start fighting back. Its also time for Kraft to start throwing his weight around.

In BB we trust...the media...not so much!

If you listened to the Goodell interview, it appears his primary reason for wanting the tapes is that he asked BB about them, and expects them to be exactly what BB told him.
In other words, the punishment, in part, was based on Goodell asking BB "what else is there" and BB answering. Now Goodell wants to confirm that answer was truthful.

He just wants them because BB admitted they exist as part of his defense. The media who want him to extend his investigation are just using that to bolster their contention that he should and he MAY.

He said himself he would only alter the existing penalty if the team failed to cooperate. Other allegations remain just that, allegations. Absent concrete proof, they got nothing. If he were to start investigating every allegation from one team that another did something, from espionage to tampering, the league would implode. He doesn't have subpoena power here, he's just the Commissioner. There are lots of things Jerry Jones or Dan Lurie or a host of other powerful owners don't ever want to be asked about even in that context, which is why this will all soon pass. Patience grasshoppers.
