Wetzel argues for the complete elimination of pre-season games, on the theory:
  • The precautions taken -- e.g. keeping your best players mainly out of the games -- makes them meaningless as games.
  • There's too much risk of injury when your best players do play.
Instead, he suggests beefing up two-team practices, etc., as much as necessary to make up for that. He even thinks they could be interesting to spectators; while he doesn't spell that argument entirely, I think his views are something like:
  • People enjoy attending TC live.
  • That said, the main money isn't in live attendance any more; it's in TV, and ...
  • ... things could be done to make practices and scrimmages into better TV.
