Welker could miss homecoming with concussion

I hope Wikler suffers no long-term ill effects from his concussion, and I hope he misses the game next Sunday. How's that for being fair and balanced?

I'm not gonna cry too much if he misses the game. With our injuries to the defense, a little balancing is in order. Hell, I don't even feel that bad about Welker being injured in general... EXCEPT, I hate seeing that it's a concussion. I can't think of anyone in the NFL who I would be happy to see lose their mind, never mind a guy I actually like and respect as a player.

On top of that, part of me was looking forward to seeing how BB would choose to defense Welker. Would he throw a curveball and put Talib on Welker one on one? Would he double Welker and trust the outside guys on Thomas/Decker? Would he concede Welker his catches and yards and focus on the other areas, limiting the big plays? Successful or not, it would have been a fascinating chess match to watch, especially if Talib, Dennard, and Gregory were all back by then.

Oh well.

If the KC D can't get pressure on the Denver OL, the Pats don't have much more hope.

The Pats are better off letting Jones & Ninko get into Manning's throwing lanes, let their DL get their hands up, disrupt those pick screens, and trying to use their versatile (if healthy) secondary to bait Manning into some poor throws. Manning put some balls out there that were ripe for the picking last nite, but KC just missed. If Talib and Dennard are back, we won't miss.

Wishing Welker a speedy recovery.

I don't know why people feel like they have to beat teams at their best. F that, I'd prefer to splay every team's 3rd string guys. At the end of the season, all it says is who won the Superbowl.

It does not say

2007 SB champs NYG*
*Luckiest play in history
*Refs did not call holding or in the grasp
*Pierre Woods was down by contact, but the Giants were allowed to turn him over and strip him

2011 SB Champs NYG*
*Every fumble bounced right back to giants
* Wes Welker dropped game winning catch.
*Sergio Brown was on the Patriots roster

2012 SB champs Balt*
*Ray Lewis cheated with banned substance
Fixed

(Dwelling?!? Who's dwelling? :confused2: )

Not that this isn't the case every game for Manning, but I really think the gameplan for the Broncos last night was hyper-focused on getting the ball out immediately. No doubt the Chiefs' reputation for pass rushing played into that, and the tackles for the Broncos did a great job one on one against the two primary pass rush threats on the Chiefs.

Not to say that the Pats are going to get GOOD pressure on Manning, but I believe they'll hit him a few more times just because the Bronco gameplan will allow for more extended routes and the Patriots inside rush has shown some good push.

I don’t think it had as much to do with Amendola having a concussion as it did with him suffering an injury in his second game back from the groin injury. That aside I was one of the ones hardest on Amendola but I am hopeful that I was overacting and his last game is going to be the building block of a great second half.

It was that people claimed that Amendola doesn't know how to protect himself. Even though it was clear that Amendola clearly protected himself on that play and it was a freak injury, people claimed that Welker doesn't get in those situations. Concussions, unless you are doing something like jumping for a pass in the air when you see a player coming to lay wood on you, are typically something that you really can't prepare for to prevent on a play.

But this thread is about Welker and not Amendola. I will bow out of this conversation now.

For what it's worth, Denver has been listed as 2½ point favorite over the Patriots next week.

That is the first time that the Pats will be the underdog at home in over eight years.

The last time the Patriots were not favored at home was November 7, 2005 when most of the secondary was injured and Peyton Manning and the 8-0 Colts beat the Patriots for the first time ever in New England, and Tom Brady had his first ever loss to the Colts.

To put that in perspective, there have been 708 NFL home underdogs since the last time the Pats were an underdog at home.

FWIW Part II: Updated Super Bowl Odds
Denver 2/1
Seattle 3/1
New Orleans 6/1
New England 8/1
San Francisco 12/1
Carolina 14/1
Kansas City 16/1
Cincinnati 18/1

FWIW Part III:
When the Chiefs were listed as the underdog last night, that was the first time since at least 1990 (no data prior to then) that any NFL team with a 9-0 record was the underdog.

Not that I care about the odds, but the odds for both the game and the Super Bowl could change based on the outcome tonight. If the Pats win or lose big, it will likely move the line.

Well even so Welker has played in a 150 career games and Amendola has played in 47.

Slot receivers take the worst beating of any players in the NFL. They go over the middle all day long with linebackers and safeties lining them up for big shot and unloading on them. Much as I hate to say it Jackie MacMullen had it right when she advised Welker to retire last offseason for the sake of his long term health. I have never seen any player take the shots he has and keep going the way he does.

I understand your point, but they haven't been in the NFL for the same number of years. And if one really wanted to go hypothetical, it could be pointed out that if Welker's knee injury occurred in week 1 rather than week 17, he'd have missed the entire season. Just sayin'...

I hope Welker makes a full recovery and is ready to play. Just not by Sunday.

I hope he plays and is at 100 its will make beating them and taking over the number 1 seed that much sweeter

KC would still have the #1 seed.

It is for that reason I was rooting for Denver to win last night at home.

Let them hold serve, Pats beat them next week, then KC to lose another game along the way.

......as long as the Patriots take care of all their own business.

ya he probably won't play. Too bad

Even with welker and the concussion...Denver are +2.5 i think it is

And it could easily be the reverse. Players don't get to choose the injuries they get they just happen, and in Amendola's case he has suffered very nasty injuries that would have put any player in football out of action. Those are the breaks, it is what it is, but there is no rhyme reason to them and no way to know who will be on the field more over the next few years.

I'm one of Welker's biggest supporters but the knocks on Amendola since he came here have been completely uncalled for. he's a really tough really talented player who will be a major contributor if he stays healthy.

I watched a ton of football yesterday, Red Zone + the feature games......IMHO, the refs have backed off the PI calls in a big way and Ty Law would once again thrive. The hand checking, tugging, clutching, impeding was a part of every pass defense. A few ticky tack calls....a couple of phantom calls.....but for the most part, the refs are letting the DBs be physical all the way down the field. The Talib/D Thomas matchup should be intense......but I'm a little nervous who covers Decker and the TE.

I am only referencing concussions, the poster was speaking to Welker’s ability to protect himself vs. Amendola’s ability, and the knee injury Welker suffered was a freak non-contact injury. Welker has always been very good at protecting himself Amendola plays with a little more disregard. That is really my only point.
