Patriots sign Welch to 53-Man Roster; Release Tarpinian

By New England Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots have announced today that OL Thomas Welch has been signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. To make room for Welch on the active roster the Patriots have released LB Jeff Tarpinian.

Welch, 6-7, 310 pounds, was originally selected by the Patriots in the seventh round (208th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Vanderbilt. After being released by the Patriots on Sept. 4, 2010 be was signed to the Minnesota practice squad on Sept. 6, 2010. He was signed to the Minnesota 53-man roster on Dec. 14 but was inactive for the final three games of the season. Welch was released by Minnesota on Sept. 3, 2011. He was signed to the Patriots practice squad on Sept. 4, 2011.

Tarpinian, 6-3, 238 pounds, was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent on July 27, 2011. He began his college career at Iowa as a defensive back before moving to linebacker during the spring of 2007. He was a top special teams player as well as a starter at linebacker during his career and recorded 97 total tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Re: So long Tarpinian

Wonder if he'll be back on practice squad. Is he a special teams player only?

Re: So long Tarpinian

Twelve teams will likely claim him out of sheer fascination...

Re: So long Tarpinian

So we kept him on the 53, but released Yeatman/Smith? A little strange.

Re: So long Tarpinian

Would you really feel better if we cut Yeatman today instead of Tarp?

Depends on how well or poorly Yeatman plays tonight, if he is even active.

I would keep Yeatman on the 53. If BB liked Tarp why not IR him? I thought he was injured. I see Yeatman/Smith as better blockers than Gronk. I hope I'm wrong.

I often see myself as more attractive and successful than Tom Brady. And like Belichick filling out a pink slip I am often *****-slapped by the cold, dark hand of reality.

Re: So long Tarpinian

Any word up via Twitter or other inane new media if The Tarp will be saved from the Turks and signed to the Patriots' PS?

Re: Welch released; Tarpanian clears waivers is on PS.

Saved from the Turks!

Good news!

Re: Welch released; Tarpanian clears waivers is on PS.

Tarp ought to be a lock to win if he ever gets on "Survivor Island".

The link doesnt say Welch released

Fixed the thread title. Everyone makes mistake, I made one sevreal year ago, I think.

This is great news ... i would assume he will be groomed as a safety and let's watch and see.

So all the guys we released to keep him got picked up and then he doesn't? Obviously Bill is playing 3-Dimensional Chess and the rest of the league is playing tiddly-winks. When he's a pro-bowler 2 years from now I'm going to laugh my ass off.
