Week 2 Pats @ Steelers pregame thread

Just a reminder that the Pats started off 1-3 last year and made the playoffs...no need to panic yet, although we did look a lot better vs Miami in week 1 last year than we did last Sunday. So far this season is a continuation of where we left off last year with the bills...

I definitely see the parallels between this start and the last one. Last year the team didn't really take off until the offensive line got healthy/improved. Should probably be the same this year.

With how the team looked last week I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats started 0-4, but I could still see the team following the script from last year and running off a win streak after a slow start.

Agreed. My worry is that right now our offense looks much more mistake prone than theirs. Mitch is very limited but he played incredibly smart last Sunday. We HAVE to protect the football when /if things break down and give our defense a fair shake

I didn't watch the game, but what did he do to play smart? I watched the highlights and saw him miss receivers on third down a bunch. The three biggest plays on the replay I saw were 1. A scramble followed by a dangerous throw to Friermuth in OT 2. A trick play 3. A up for grabs swing pass that Harris scored on.

We also hosted five players for workouts and visits. Offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons, defensive linemen Mika Tafua, Sam Kamara and Micah Dew-Treadway, and linebacker Ron’Dell Carter were all in Foxborough on Tuesday.

Lachavious Simmons? That's too close to lascivious for comfort. What were his parents thinking? (Unless that's how they got together and ... nah.)

Mitch is one of those guys who excell when the play breaks down. At least he did in that Jacksonville playoff game where somehow the Pats won partially due to an officials call. I couldn't believe how well that guy played in that game. I'm hoping he has regressed....

This game will come down to which offense doesn’t lose the game. I’d give a large edge to the defenses in this one.

I know the Steelers have good receivers but Mitch isn’t good. He passed for less than 200 yards in a 70 minute game. If the Pats can bottle up the run game I think this one will be decided by who gives up the ball more, Mac or Mitch.

Mac Jones had the ball for more time vs Miami than Tribisky did vs Cincinnati.

Both QBs completed 21 passes last Sunday. Jones had 19 more passing yards, but an INT and fumble for a walk in TD.

This game boils down to the worst offense. I believe that you play the Bengals offense much different than NEs. Cincinnati's offense can erupt at anytime.

Trubisky never suited up for Jacksonville. That was Blake Bortles, who despite being a disappointment, is a better QB at his best than Trubisky at his.

He avoided turnovers for one and got out of some sacks. Seems tough to get negative plays on him due to his mobility. There was also one play he was under immense pressure and somehow avoided a safety (probably should have been grounding and a safety but pit had all kinds of luck that day tbh). He did miss some throws and thats part of his limitations but he did the game manager thing to a tee and they ultimately pulled it off thanks to the Bengals miscues. Whether it was a fluke or not on mitchs end remains to be seen. But fwiw i also did see a graphic sometime where he has never thrown a pick 6, not sure how true that is.

That is a crazy stat about the time of possession. I'd argue that, Mitch going 4-15 on third down had a lot to do with that time of possession. It seems like the Pats are more likely to move the ball, but also more likely to turn the ball over/have a negative play that gets them off schedule.

I wonder if both teams are going to be as conservative as possible on offense this week.

Defense did cause fumbles and nearly had an int. The ball just bounced wrong. Those things happen.

McCourty was in perfect position to grab an int, he was right there watching it come in ready to catch it then I think it was Bryant or someone that flew in and batted it down with no defender nearby like 2 feet from McCourty

Wise had a strip sack in which the ball bounced to a miami player. Jones' sack fumble happened to bounce to a miami player as well. Things like that are what change games and why the 20-7 flatters miami.

Good news on the injury front:

Not that it likely matters much for this season (and definitely not this game), but it's disappointing that Ray is having trouble staying on the field already. I kept reading that this was pretty much the only reason he didn't get drafted higher, and didn't have the college career that was expected of a 5 star recruit like him. Just too many injuries, too many times. Way early still, but that trend appears to be holding so far in the pros. Hopefully he gets back soon and this was all just a blip.
