I don't know what would happen if the Bills just said no we are not playing. I guess a bunch of fines that the Bills owner would pay? It's a very messed up situation.

I know players have died in sports before and the show must go on. But McDermott is a bit different and I would not put it past him to just say he cannot ask his players to play next week.

Hopefully he wakes up after 24/48 hours and it does not come to this. Even in that scenario you guys will be playing a team that had a very bad week of practice etc, so a win is a good bet.

I don’t think it would come to that. The front office, the coaches, players know that the show will go on. People lose close loved ones and get 3 days off bereavement. It sucks but that is how it works. The Bills won’t be allowed to just forfeit games.

Hopefully he stabilizes and the Bills can refocus. Even though I’m a Pats fan I don’t want us sliding into the playoffs through the back door.

Too soon to say I support this decision? But also no way they do this.

I think Cincinnati and Buffalo should agree to a tie, coin flip then decides their relative seedings. If they can, they play this weekend and no game this week. Not fair to either team but sometimes life throws curveballs and best to go with the floe.

2 forfeits seems very unfair, unless the players from the Bills simply feel they can not play and I would respect that.

If it was commotio cordis, there’s usually a delay (mere seconds) between the trauma and collapse. After impact happens, the heart changes its normal rhythm, which leads to cardiac arrest.

I saw this happen in a boys lacrosse game before goalie chest protectors were changed in 2021 to protect against it. Luckily the team had an AED at the field, someone who recognized what happened and knew how to address it.

the amount of adrenaline (epinephrine) in body is physiologic, the epinephrine dose given prior to cardio version is a much higher dose. I do not think physiologic levels of adrenaline would necessarily delay V fib onset, but they got to him quickly and am willing to bet the EMT's and Doctors administered epi and defibrillated with 2 minutes....a very positive prognostic occurrence in a 24 yo man. ( I am a board certified Internist and subspecialist required to certify in ACLS every 2 years).

positive factors during arrest- rapid time between collapse and start of CPR and I am assuming high quality CPR/defib and rapid time to get him to ER

Key question did he have preserved neurofunction post CPR (could he communicate or answer simple verbal questions or understand those questions? If he has good neurofunction (can he speak, write, understand etc, post arrest...that is a very good sign

Other tests they are likely to run ASAP; CT/MRI of brain possibly PET scan looking for evidence of hemmhorhagic stroke, EEG and somatopsensory evoked potent;s to test for brain function, routine blood work, constant ECG monitoring to look for evidence of recurrent arrhythmias. Probably an echocardiogram

Factors before cardiac arrest:​

• Age
• Ethnicity
• Poor health including diabetes, cancer, infection, kidney disease and stroke

Factors during cardiac arrest:​

• Time between collapse and start of CPR/defibrillation
• Quality of CPR/defibrillation
• Whether survivor had neurological function during or immediately after CPR

Factors after cardiac arrest and resuscitation:​

• Neurological function: Generally, poor function equals poor prognosis. But it could be complicated by medical instability and treatments. Some patients suffer a stroke after a cardiac arrest.
• Neurophysiologic function: Tests include somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) and electroencephalogram (EEG).
• Neuroimaging and monitoring: Cranial CT, MRI, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and positron emission tomography (PET) determine structural brain injury, mostly to exclude hemorrhage or stroke.
• Biochemistry: from blood or cerebrospinal fluid

Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.

That's irrelevant, just an "it is what it is" situation. It wouldn't be seen as an achievement nor should it be seen as anything negative, just another game.

Lots of chatter out there.

Troy Vincent is denying that the NFL gave the players 5 minutes to warm up and resume play. Some legit media types are calling BS.

Rumor is that the Bills and Bengals players refused to go back out and play. They called the game and basically said F Off to your 5 minute warmup. We just watched a fellow player go through 8 minutes of CPR because his heart stopped. The Bengals HC was also not on board with such a short time to get back in game condition and more importantly, resuming play after what just happened on the field.

No Bills or Bengals players were allowed to speak to the media. Maybe it was because of Hamlin or maybe it was because of the 5 minute thing was true and the NFL is circling the wagons.
