Did a quick All-22 review, mercifully that's the last time I ever need to watch that game. Concentrated on the Offensive Line.
Weakest link was Jacobs, has a few plays in the pass game. Had another bad cut block but was immaterial to the play. Chargers had some good rushers so he played probably how you would expect, held his own often and then had plays he was just destroyed.
Lowe was OK, most plays did well but then he had the hands to the face penalty, got beat on a bull rush, was the one beat on the 3rd down when Maye had Bourne open and was hit, he also missed a run block that stuffed a play. He can hod his own as an adequate pass blocker but always below average as a run blocker.
Strange played pretty well for first time out, he had the bad early snap, but he showed to be nimble and quick and held his own with power as well. Actually, got to the second level and blocked guys, didn't know you could still do that LOL. He does look like the perfect build/skill set for a center, interested to see him going forward.
Onwenu had 2 pass rushes he lost but only 1 that effected a pass play otherwise he was pretty good. Though the 1 play looked like a real slow fat guy on defense was able to get back to Maye, so that was weird to watch.
Robinson-Overall more improvement, Still has moment of getting lost but less than in pre-season for sure. He put more people on the ground than anybody on either teams line. He finished downfield regularly. He does tend to miss when he needs to think on the fly, like letting a backside defender jump into his gape and take the rb while he had nobody to block where he looked. He was fooled on a delayed blitz, decided to help block to his left, already a double team, as soon as LB saw that, ran free up the middle. Robinson never looked back at the LB. So a mixed bag but he's a ton better than he was early in the year. He can pancake some guys. I think if he can slightly improve the pass pro on stunts and blitzes and just smarten up during the play he could be really good. There is hope.
Wallace-Needs some work, only played a couple of series but still pays too high in his pads on pass blocking. He missed a second level block on a run play. ON 1 pass play he kept backing up so the End just ran at him, shoved him with 1 arm, and Wallace fell backwards. He should not have backed up and given the defender that mush space and he was too high and no balanced properly so was easily shoved backwards. Same issues in pre-season. He needs an off-season to work on things. Jacobs looked better in the game, sad to say but Robinson was terrible before and not bad now so hope for Wallace but not a great showing.
Gibson and Rahm both missed a blitz block.
Maye was not as off as I thought watching live but he had a couple inaccurate throws he hasn't missed this year, without a ton of pressure on those. I think he was trying to run a little too often, not from fear of the line but whenever he had man and saw a possible escape he would go. A couple plays he was better to stay in, I think a combo of trying to make a play himself with his legs and also the defense. Chargers were rushing 5 regularly, sometimes 6, the 5 would change which 5 came. They did not rush 4 regularly. They basically said we are going to pressure with 5 or 6, try to get guys open quicker than we get to the QB. The line did struggle at certain times on blitzes, Maye struggled recognizing a couple of the blitzes. It is a good defense with smart coaching. Maye played a C game. I think the biggest issue is they'd send 5, play man, nobody gets open, he sees a lane and figures I can run, the DB's have theeir back to him and just needed to excape line. When it worked it was good, a couple times he couldn't get passed the line and did not work.
Hebert was a technician, but mainly because he had all day to throw. The plays he had pressure or receivers did not get separation despite no pressure he might have been 0 for 10 on those plays. Those plays rarely came back-to-back so did not matter, he'd just complete the next one. The difference in pressure was glaring but the Chargers regularly sent 5 or 6 to make the Pats get out quick. Pats rushed 4 a lot but even when they sent 5 they rarely got home.
Overall, we need a RT and a LT, the interior might be OK if Robinson keeps improving and Strange builds off this game. They could upgrade Robinson in FA but with all the other holes, they can probably live with him there next year if he keeps getting better and spend money elsewhere. I'm not counting on Wallace to play RT, so far he can't do it, I wouldn't want to go into next year hoping he makes the leap.
We need that 1 WR that can separate and make the contested catches.
RT, LT, #1 WR are the 3 areas of most need.
Not that you can't upgrade elsewhere but with all the needs on defense as well I think that's the Offense priority and on defense it's a edge pass rush and linebacker (maybe Bentley comes back and fills that?)
