NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Week 1: Other Games

Thornton was never an NFL caliber starting receiver.
Another epic draft fail by the guy who can’t win without Brady.

If he’s one of the Chiefs starters they’re in sad shape at the position.

First downfield contact of Kelce's career and he takes out his own teammate.

Hilarious.
Evidently, Mr Swift ran the wrong route and that is why both players were in the same location.

But, Swifty has the latitude to adjust his route because he is the go to guy. Mahomie and him live next to each other and they just launched a Steakhouse called "1587." Additionally, this is Swifts final season, so KC wants to send him out like a hero.

I think there's no doubt the Chiefs are struggling with WR talent.

Any team that has late-period JJSS and Hollywood Brown on their team obviously is

Even with Worthy and Rice it's not clear that it's a great WR room.

Just like our good years, they end up drafting late so don't get top-shelf talent.

I can see why a talent-poor team would pick Thornton up after he cleared waivers.

At that point his 2nd round contract numbers get zero'd out and he's a JAG.

KC signed him to onto their practice squad on a reserve contract so basically no commitment.

If he gets a lot of snaps while Worthy and Rice are out then gets used as a stretch the field guy on a pass-happy offense, it's a nice win for them.

If he stays on our team he keeps those 2nd round guaranteed numbers and needs to have a big role to justify them.

Given he wasn't on the path to being WR1 or WR2 here, it was time for us to move on.

It is pretty wild the Pats have only drafted one WR that has gone over 1,000 receiving since Terry Glenn in Julian Edelman - a converted QB. We're getting close to 30 years now.

Out of curiosity, I checked some teams to see how many they have drafted in that time span.

Steelers came to mind first. They've drafted 8.
Packers have drafted 6.
Bengals 6.
Vikings 5.
49ers 3.
Cowboys 2.
Ravens 2.

Yeah, this is our life. It probably won't be much different during Vrabel's run here either.

There were so many good receivers on this team in the 70s 80s and even early 90s. Hard to believe they can't draft them properly now. Hoping that changes with Vrabel.

I know everyone wants to celebrate the end of the Chiefs, but context is important. It was week one…

The Chiefs schedule gets harder, the Chargers schedule gets easier.

This is only year two of Harbaugh, it could only get better. The Chargers were a sht show prior to Harbaugh’s arrival and Herbert has been put through a blender.

Both offenses were rusty, it was week one. Both defenses retained more of their players and had less transition.

The offenses on both teams will improve timing and execution. At the end of the day the Chiefs schedule gets harder, their path is harder. They’ll still be a very good team if they nail down their execution and timing.
KC/SD
NFCE - 4
AFCW - 6
AFCS - 4

KC - Baltimore, Detroit, @ Buffalo.
SD - Pittsburgh, Minnesota, @ Miami.

They play the exact same schedule as KC with the exception of 3 games.

And they were pretty evenly matched, KC made more mistakes, missed more opportunities. Not sure what your flex is at this point, they’re both going to improve. Week one isn’t peak season performance.

Jones and Kelce are wrong side of 30
Mahomes has not been great since 2022, probably time to accept he’s not great anymore. I’d take Herbert over him going forward.

KC just doesn’t scare teams like they used to. Do Rice and Worthy make you game plan for them? No. Hill and Kelce are gone or done. Mahomes is not the same. Just a question whether defense and Andy Reid play calling can keep them at the top of AFC or Mahomes from 2022 shows up..
Ravens or Bills are the top dogs in AFC now,
Bills?? I want to see the Bengals on Offense. Now the Ravens that's a different story.

I disagree about Mahomes. He looks more fit and mobile than the last few years, and made some great plays last night. Looks better than ever to me.

The schedules are not as different as you claim.

Mahomes was looking good, nothing bad about his play.

I said it last year after the SB, when Mahomes looked his worst: all he needs is one great skill player to really threaten the field again. Reid and him will possibly luck into one or two before the window is closed. Kelce wouldn't need to be relied on so much... Etc.

We had a few years like this. Still racks up wins, most often double digit, but the skill positions were the writing on the wall. You even win your mid-season big battle possibly, but if it was when everything was on the line, from playoff contention, seeding, to the playoffs themselves, you fall short.

Things changed when we'd have a healthy gronk and a healthy edelman. Or a great RB, a great Edelman, and a blocking Gronk. Or when we didn't bench Butler? Oof.

Could you imagine Mahomes with Gronk, Edelman, Amendola, Hogan, Dion Lewis?

Yeah I'm good on that, I hope they fail every single draft from here on out and suck at FA.
