We Need A Healthy Cannon

So was this in-and-outburger simply to monitor Cannon's snaps, or was there a(nother) injury issue which had to be nursed (again)?

I think Romo was correct when he suggested that the Pats were managing Cannon due to his relative lack of game-conditioning - from missing significant practice time in Camp (due to some sort of calf issue).

When Cannon was on the field, he was way more effective than Waddle. At this point, I'm thinking that the Pats need two effective backup Tackles.

Obviously there was that stretch where Waddle looked bad, but what was his snap count?

The pass blocking was great until it wasn't, and then we saw Waddle. How much did he play?

and tbh he was playing JJ Watt. He may never face a better pass rusher the rest of the year

I think I saw somewhere that he played something like 29 snaps? I can only recall a couple plays where Watt really took over a play, so I don't think Waddle was that bad overall. But obviously that's a mismatch we can hopefully avoid more going forward.

A healthy Howitzer would be nice as well.

The o-line did well yesterday though Waddle and Mason had pass protection issues.

Waddle looked completely outclassed against Watt. But I have to question why the coaches didn't pick up on this and get a TE on that side to help chip Watt?
To me this was as much a failure on the part of the coaching staff as it was on Waddle.

Waddle looked adequate when he was on the field and Watt wasn't. But when Watt was on the field, Watt dominated him.
Let’s remember he was playing JJ Watt. Most linemen don’t look good against JJ Watt.
I think Watt was playing inside until Waddle came in. That is when I noticed Watt moved to the outside. Not sure if it was part of game plan, as he does move around, but it worked as Watt put pressure on TB.

I'm not going to worry too much about my RT getting beat by a healthy JJ Watt. That's just kind of an inevitability you accept and be thankful you got the win anyway. I think people get too caught up in Cannon wrecking Watt a couple years ago... only for it to come out within 48 hours that Watt had been trying to play through a major back injury and needed to go on IR. Even before that news came out, I went back and rewatched the matchup closely because I was surprised by that result, and noted on this forum that he was clearly playing injured. It was easy to see, he was nowhere near the same player and was getting thoroughly outplayed by his backup.

But that's the scary part of playing the Texans in week 1: you're getting a healthy Watt going against you. Nobody on this roster is shutting down a healthy Watt in anything close to a 1 on 1 matchup, and that's fine because there's maybe a few guys in the league (and Solder isn't one of them) where you could reasonably be comfortable with that matchup. Watt is absurdly good when he's healthy, and the other guys get paid too.

Yeah it appears that Cannon's reduced snap count was the result of building his stamina than it was of treating an in-game injury, thankfully.

I'd love to have another backup OT/LT worthy of the 53, but I now doubt if it is even possible to add to the OL position, especially when the issues at other positions, specifically at RB, WR & PR, are taken into consideration.
