extending Godchaux is the prudent move. he is 30 years old, plays a high percentage of snaps, and along with Barmore, has been extremely effective against the run.
giving Godchaux 2/$30 is a fair AAV for his position and performance. how much is guaranteed is clearly the sticking point.
converting his current salary/per game roster bonus ($8.3m ) to a sign bonus spread over the next 2 seasons is a good start. guarantee this year at $15m. next years salary of $15m guarantees next February, allowing the team to decide if they want him back.
Godchaux gets $23m guaranteed between sign bonus and 2024 base, all guaranteed.
Next year is wait and see how he performs this year.
2024 cap hit-$4.13m bonus + $15m base=$19m cap hit
2025 cap hit-$4.13 bonus. $15m tbd. cap hit either $4.15 or $19m
Sounds like a good start to me. I agree he’s a good performer, definitely worth keeping around.

Sticking point I see is, he’s thirty years old. He’s at a point where he’s not looking to kick the can down the road. What you’re suggesting could turn out to be one year for $23m, and then he’s on the market as a 31 year old DL. Would that be good enough? It’s really a one year raise for a lukewarm second year option, as I see it.

Might need to sweeten it. Maybe guarantee next year salary for injury at signing, guarantee for skill at start of next league year? Or add a third year, second year guarantees as I just suggested, third year option either not guaranteed or guaranteed as you suggest?

Two questions.
1. What would he get, if he hit the open market at the end of his contract now?
2. What do you expect DL retirement age to be?

I don’t know for the first, for the second I’m thinking 33 to 35 seems a realistic expectation. So his mindset is likely to be that the next contract he signs will be his last. Thats why I think he’s going to want something sweeter than you proposed, and why I’d favor adding the third year if it can be done in an equitable manner, one that protects both parties.

the difference between Godchaux and for someone like Barmore, is aside from age obviously, is that Barmore is very effective against the run, and pressures the qb, allowing him to stay on the field most downs.
Godchaux is very effective against the run, but does not pressure the qb
