Yes last year was not the best as far as off season moves, but what do the names Harrison, Colvin and Dillon mean to you, just to name a few?

Those three players I don't believe are the best examples. Look at Dillon for instance, had a great season to start (behind a great offensive line), played poorly last year between injuries, and is now grossly overpaid (5years, 25million for a 30yr+ running back w/injuries). I for one am not comfortable w/Dillon as a starting running back for next year. Colvin was seriously injured, and now is fully recovered and starting to earn what he is getting paid. Harrison was a key contributor, and now is getting towards the end of the road, if he can even make a full recovery from last year's injury. I'd say out of the three (Colvin, Harrison, Dillon), the Patriots made decent moves, maybe overpaid Colvin a little bit, Dillon's extension was rediculous especially at his age, and Harrison is really a wild card at this point. I'm glad to have Colvin and Harrison, not sure about Dillon anymore. I appreciate the point you're trying to make, but if you're telling me you don't think it's in the teams best interest to pursue somebody like Arrington, or even Ty Law for that matter, all I can say is stats don't lie. Law had 10 int's last year, that's a justifiable reason to pay him serious money, and w/the amount of turnovers caused by the defense last year (or lack of turnovers for that matter), I'd say we could certainly use some help there. Once again, I value winning a super bowl more than having the Patriots send half the team to the Pro Bowl, but with the cap being raised, and the Patriots having some room to work, I'd like to see them get a proven player who demands a middle level or so salary as opposed to, a dozen players willing to take the minimum salary. Why would a player take a mininum salary if he thought he compete at the same level with somebody who is making much more?

1. I don't believe Dillons extension was for five yrs, it was for $5 mil/yr, tho.
2. Colvin is worth every penny.
3. Harrison is recovering faster than a 21 yr old MaGahee did from a similar injury.
4. Read other people's comments on Arrington.
5. Law's 10 interceptions have to be balanced off with his 14 PI penalties,only 9 of which were accepted.(Meaning declining the penalty resulted in more ydg.)
6.Because they want to win, doof.

(Corey Dillon signed through 2009.)

You're right!! Stats don't lie. Winners of 3 of the past 5 Superbowls with a strategy to not overpay anyone. That's the stat I pay attention to.

not that it matters, but I'm assuming the "personnel types" said/meant the Patriots have fewer "blue" or elite players, but far more "red" types.
Yeah. ten characters

edit. and that was player /personnel directors, but I was too busy to write all that at the time (see location).

And on a different note, I had an opportunity to see much of camp last year. And while Starks was a bust from day one, Chad Scott was a player all through camp.

WRONG. Stats DO lie. Is it stats that make Brady a great QB? Is it stats that make Manning a choker? Give me a friggin break. Do you want a bunch of stat-obsessed parts or a cohesive unit? It is amazing to me that, after enjoying the success we have in recent years and seeing how the Pats brass has put it all together, a Pats fan would actually pine for big-name, big-stat players out of boredom rather then trust that BB and Pioli will assemble the best TEAM possible.

I am very surprised that the rest of you aren't killing this poster. It is an absolute joke.

Not much would make me happier to see the Patriots win another Super Bowl, I've been a Pat's Fan since I've been old enough to appreciate football. I'm getting a little sick of the Patriots sticking to signing mediocre/unknown/risky football players that frankly don't have that much upside if u ask me. Take for example last year's free agent signings; Chad Brown, Beisel, Scott, Starks. The Patriots decided to be cheap as usual and get a bunch of players that, for one were risky and unreliable at best and perhaps thats why we didn't win the super bowl last year. As a Pats fan, I must say it irritates me to not even hear about the Patriots taking interest in somebody like Lavar Arrington for instance. He is a quality player, that would certainly fill a need on the Patriots roster, and cost less than McGinest (had we kept him @ $8.5mil). As a Pats fan, I almost HAVE TO trust Belicheck and Pioli, hell they've one us 3 Super Bowls, but I'm getting bored with not hearing anything ever about the Patriots free agent interests, and getting bored with what uninteresting players they MIGHT go after, especially after watching other teams snatch up big name free agents before they Patriots get a chance (not that they would consider any big names anyway). Not trying to offend anyone, but just trying to voice my opinion, and see what other people have to say about this.

Big name free agents don't mean wins. PERIOD. If the Patriots success in 2001, 2003 AND 2004 doesn’t prove that for you than maybe you are willing to look back to last season. The Seahawks and the Steelers went to the Super Bowl. Look at their free agents signings. Below was taken from Profootaballweekly:

*******
Seahawks
President of football operations Tim Ruskell set the table, hitting tape-measure home runs in free agency (WR Joe Jurevicius, DT Chuck Darby, DE Bryce Fisher) and the draft (LBs Lofa Tatupu and LeRoy Hill) that were in great part responsible for a franchise-record 13-victory regular season, as well as a runaway division title in the otherwise weak NFC West.
Key arrivals —
WR Joe Jurevicius/ex-Buccaneer, March 25;
UFA DT Chartric Darby/ex-Buccaneer, March 19 (three years, $3 million, $800,000);
UFA DE Bryce Fisher/ex-Ram, March 15 (four years, $10 million);

Steelers
WR Cedrick Wilson, the Steelers’ only major free-agent signing, made his mark as a vertical threat. His play picked up in the postseason, as he caught TD passes at Cincinnati and at Denver.
Key arrivals —
UFA WR Cedrick Wilson/ex-49er, March 8 (four years, $8 million, $2 million SB).
********

Jurevicius, Darby, Fisher and Wilson. Those were some HUGE names. Granted the Pats didn’t do well in free agency last year and it cost them some games but it was not what cost them their shot the Super Bowl. Kevin Faulk and Troy Brown fumbles as well as Brady’s costly INT is was cost them their shot at Pittsburgh and a chance at the S.B.

The Pats approach is better than most teams.

Some prefer Washington's approach to cap management, the draft and free agency.

Some prefer the approach of the patriots.

I prefer the approach of the patriots.

This approach makes long-term sense and brings us playoff contenders year after year.

If we have say $10M to spend, the patriots would rather extend present players, and perhaps re-sign a couple, and sign a few mid-level free agents with upside. The patriots almost never are close in a bidding war for top free agents.

LaVar Arrington?! LAVAR F*CKING ARRINGTON? I swear, it should be a crime to post something that stupid. He's not a quality player, he's a name player. I really hate the average fan because all they care about is names, not production. Sure, let's go sign up LaVar, let him freelance from the OLB spot, and watch as our carefully crafted defense crumbles. But he's a big name, so we'll be sure to have plenty of storylines from the sideline reporter when we're losing another game because the defense has a gaping hole in it. We could have gone 16-0 every season, winning every Superbowl during BB's tenure and it wouldn't be good enough for some people.
