Literally the exact same thing was being said about the defense last year - in particular, the run defense - on /r/Patriots. Judging by the Steelers post-game thread from 2018 that someone linked to yesterday, the same things were being said here.

Hell, some people were saying it about the offense, too.

As far as the flu causing the team, especially the defense, to play so poorly, the KC game will be the proof. If the whole team, especially the D, looks sharp, then yes, the flu may be the cause. If not, the cause lies elsewhere. As for the WR issues, Sanu's injury could be the cause for his poor play. Only time will tell. It is sad to note that, at times during this season, we had three all-pro caliber receivers on the team and none of them are here now when we really need them.

KC is the Pats biggest challenge since the Baltimore game. It's going to be a measuring stick game for sure. But things look grim right now.

    Jesus Christ.

    No they don't.

    Imperfect is not grim.

    The Bengals are grim.

Ahhh yes that explains it. Because the offense was firing on all cylinders before they got sick! LOL

If the defense was really dogged by the flu, what are the chances the Pats win?

we don’t nearly have the sample size needed to draw a valid and reliable conclusion on Sanu.

I was actually really impressed with how confidently he fielded that punt that bounced the other night

    It IS different.

That was Then; this is Now.

Each season, each team, is as if brand new.

Even the man some of you worship as a god has said Exactly the same thing.

Maybe grim isn't the word, but it feels suspiciously similar to 2015.

In 2015 they came within 2 points of going to the Super Bowl and should have won the game.

When anyone with a pulse can see that nobody is getting open, WHY THE **** IS THE PHYSICAL MISMATCH ON THE BENCH WHILE PHIL ****ING DORSETT IS IGNORING TB?!?

Why, what the **** reason Josh, did we completely abondon the heavy set that saw us drive down the field easily enough, to sputter for a fg. Then we go 5 wide because Rex needs snaps and McDummy needs to prove thats hes smarter than the Ravens, who in case you all missed it, run to win in a league dominated by light passing defenses.

If your WRs are ****, line sony up in the backfield with White/Rex split wide.

Am I the only one that saw an oline that was effective moving folks for the first time in weeks, only to cripple their effectiveness by only running (majority anyway) out of the god damn gun the entire second half? Why did we abandon the run in the first quarter? I swear to god, McDummy believes it isn't a win unless 40% of snaps are taken out of the gun.

How many 1st and 20s ended up converted after we exclusively switched to passing? First it was by choice, exhausting our defense with an inability to convert, leading to necessitating the pass attack.

I still can't believe they benched the one guy with the physical tools to make plays despite being covered. In a game when the defense's game plan could have seen him singled up w/o help ALL GAME LONG.

My inexplicable hatred of 34 aside, can we let Sony get a rythm? He seems much more effective when he isn't being subbed out for a guy that doesn't run as well as White, and isn't half the pass catcher either. Rex is a spaz. He's just as likely to roll up Mitchells knee, while inexplicably getting tripped up by nobody. He can't get through practices without hurting himself, or Brady while taking a ****ing hand off. We kept him so we an throw the rookie on inactive every week?
Definately couldn't have used that pick at a position of weakness, given literally any other skill position on offense is lacking talent AND depth.
Josh McDaniels refuses to run the god damn ball, even when the base set is the only way we could move the damn ball until garbage time. Keep in mind the score didn't absolutely dictate passing until late in the 3rd/early 4th. They had plenty of time to chew clock (if they desired), and give their mash unit defense, half of which flew on a seperate plane, a chance to take a blow.
We all know Harry's skillset. That catch against Dallas anyone? Throw him the ****ing rock where the undersized db can't get his hands on it, and watch in amazement. His hands are insane. His size is his best weapon. He's a god damn horse for a db to bring down. I'd personally love some screens to get him going, rather than timing plays a db is sitting on, then benching the kid because a db made a damn fine play and got away with some contact at the top of the route.
Put gilmore on this kid in practice, and force him to play through ******** contact all week in practice. Looked like he expected a flag and quit on the route. Rookies doing rookie things. If he makes a habit out of it, I'll be concerned. At the same time, get this kid on the outside and let him high point, for the love of christ. What he lacks in speed he makes up for vertically attacking the ball.
Meyers, similarly, has excellent ball skills to go with polished route running. Very dissapointed he seems like an afterthought to the game plan in place of Phil "I'm done with him" Dorsett. What he has in speed, he completely lacks in ball skills in traffic. He can't translate his speed into seperation and struggles with contested catches. He's great when hes singled up on guys who were bagging groceries the week before, but even some of them handle him easily enough.
Our offense is woefully dysfunctional, and it starts with the personell and game plan. I wish McDaniel's went to Indy.

If they had the same flu I have now, I can see it wrecking a game easy. Couldn’t play checkers right now without problems

That's a very glass half full view. I'm not that kind of guy, unfortunately.
