I posted this after the 2012 season and thought I should really update it. So here you are:

The graphs that @Calciumee put together really provide a great counterpoint to those that claim that the Patriots were always awful prior to 2001. The only down periods were in 1967-73 (Clive Rush-John Mazur era) and 1989-1993 (Rod Rust-**** MacPherson era). Over the history of their existence one would be very hard pressed to find many other NFL franchises with so few down years.

Of course the truth won't prevent the fans of other teams from continuing to state their misinformed opinions as facts.
